HELP!! Router Problems!! Router got slower...

Just a few days ago, I was able to access the internet and play games using my router with blazing (normal cable modem) speeds. Now, it seems that the connection through my router has gotten much slower.

This all started a few days ago... I was playing an online game and suddenly, my connection broke. My cable modem messed up, so I had to unplug it for a while (about 1/2 hour). When I got it working again, I noticed the slowness of the router.

For example, ping for the internet games use to be 200-400. Now it's over 1000!!! What's going on?

Surfing the net has become slower too.

I tried using just my cable modem and not the router, and got much faster speeds. There must be something wrong with the router...

Can anyone help me?!?!

My router is a NetGear Cable/DSL Wireless Router MR814 v2

It's wireless, but I still use wires.

Thanks!!!!

Cool

Did you also do a power off reset of the router? If not do both at same time. Power down modem and router. wait about 1 minute and power up modem then router .

I'll second doing your reset.... if that doesn't work... also consider doing a virus/trojan and spyware scan for something hogging your connection.

I did power off my router when I powered off my cable modem. The problem is still there.

I also noticed that the lights marked cable and PC and my modem is constantly blinking while my computer is on (while connected to the router. I don't beleve this has ever happened before. It usually only blinks when internet activity is occuring, but now it blinks all the time while connected to my router.

Could there be something wrong with the wireless parts of the router? Is there anyway to turn off the wireless stuff?

Thanks for the help!!

I think you better do a virus scan and adware/spyware scan.

There is something up with the ISP and that specific kind of router. I received an email saying that with those kind of rouers that the iternet is going really slow. It didnt tell me when it would clear up though.

Well you are right that activity light should not be flashing constantly and that is probably the culprit, but as to what is causing it, you'll need to trac it down. What about looking in task manager and see what is running that perhaps shouldn't be...

Didn't find anything that looked suspicious. When I use just my cable modem, I've noticed that the activity light also flashes when idle, but not as often. I don't believe that it has ever flashed when idle before either. However, I can still get fast speeds with just me cable modem.

Can anyone tell me what's wrong?

may seem like a stupid question, but You state:

"This all started a few days ago..."

Wouldn't have happened to be thursday 8/14/03-afternoonish would it?

The problem you're having is different than some others, but there just seems to be a puzzle in the making.

In your case a connection to these others seems to be a real long shot, but...

Check out these threads when You get a chance:

No Browser

Can't Connect

Cable Modem Crashing out

Been following these kinds of threads lately, becuase of one of my current problems. There's more, and it just seems that something is not quite right.

What Browser are U using?

I am using internet explorer.

Could this be related to the worm virus that has been going around? I got the worm virus around the same time this happened, but it is gone now. I am still having speed problems...

Could this be a symptom of the virus?

Personally, I don't know Changoman.

One question would be: Are you SURE its gone? You may want to check again--just to make sure. Whether or not it has anything to do with your conection speed--I really don't know. Hopefully someone else can help you out with that.

PS Here's a thought: if you have another browser, say netscape, give it a try and see if your speed is any better. On cable you should be able to DL and install it in pretty short order. If you do please let us know if it makes any difference or not. My problem revolves around IExplorer. I'm having to use netscape, but at least I'm online.

Thanx!

That's for letting me know about the netscape, Changoman.

I've always been stuck on dial-up, so I don't know much about high speed connects, routers, hubs and all that.

But I've no doubt that once ya get used to that speed--it really sucks without it!
