Home Networking
I just purchased a DLink DI-604 router to share my cable internet connection between my desktop and laptop. My desktop is running Windows 98SE and my laptop is running Windows XP Pro. After connecting both computers to the router, I ran the XP networking wizard on both computers, using the workgroup name HOME and the computer names HOME2 and HOME3. I restarted both computers, and then tried to set up a shared printer on the laptop to print through the desktop, and it can't find the desktop at all. I changed the settings manually and ran the wizard probably 10 times and couldn't get it to work. The only thing that I think could be causing a problem is that, due to storms in my area, my cable modem wasn't online last night, but I would assume that the two computers could still talk to each other......oh and by the way, when trying to ping the desktop from the laptop, I get an error message stating destination host unreachable. Also, all settings on my router APPEAR to be correct. Any help that anyone could provide would be extremely helpful. Thanks in advance

http://www.homenethelp.com
http://www.practicallynetworked.com There are a couple of different ways to get the sharing to work. The easiest is to install NetBEUI on both systems. It's all explained at both the above sites. |

So your problem is with the XP networking tool. I have read that a lot of people have had problems with that tool.
Read the first home networking sites recommended by reboot. The first contains a tutorial that will take you through setting up your network step by step. The same site contains another tutorial that tells you how to set up your mixed network with TCP/IP. I think that is a better idea when one of your computers is XP. And the fact that I can't even ping the other computer is kinda strange.

Like I said. I think you are better off with TCP/IP. Set your systems to DCHP and let your router do it's thing.
