internet explorer

Hi Folks:
I've had this problem for about a month now and can not seem to fix it. I hope that someone can help me.
The problem is on a Win98/SE. I have a dial up 56k,128RAM
Fat32, AMDprocessor,12GB w/ 8 GB free, I'm running at 64-73 % and should be running around 83%. My problem started when I install netscape browser while I still had internet explorer installed, should have been o.k. and was for a little while. Then along came an update for internet explorer and when I updated (or tried, I started to have problems) The first try of the update was no good because of netscape was on the system. O.K. so I uninstalled netscape and then tried to get the update for my internet explorer and then 'wham' a virus. My virus program 'AVG' took care of it or so I thought. I started to have all kinds of little quirks going on, such as invisible commands and such that was doing nothing but using my RAM and hard drive and I have to use a double command to shut down my computer after coming online. I finally have everthing o.k. except the double shutdown procedure and am running internet explorer6 Sp1 and its internet tools plus the Q updates. I only have this problem when I go online but after I go online and then try to shutdown or restart I have to issue the command twice. From what I've said here, is that enough information for someone to help me with this. Do I have the right internet explorer and updates installed for my system and if I don't, how do I get the right ones? Another question is that I don't understand why I got a virus from Microsoft download area and I know for sure that I did. When I issue the shutdown command the first time and it doesn't shut down I do a Ctrl+Alt+Delete one time and every time it shows me that the internet explorer is not shut down and then when I issue the shutdown the second time, everything goes down o.k. Also when after I issue the first shutdown and it does not go down and I do a Ctrl+Alt+Delete and choose shutdown, the system goes down normal. Any thoughts for me?
Thanks

Internet Explorer 6 on Win98 can be very troublesome. I'd do the add/remove and restore previous configuration till it's back to 5.5 or 5.0, then go to Windows Update again and get that caught up with everything EXCEPT IE6.

Go to housecall.trendmicro.com and get a free online scan to make sure you don't have a virus or trojan that got past AVG. I'd also use Ad-Aware or Spybot Search & Destroy to get rid of any spyware that you may have.
