Laptop to PC woes

Sorry Moderators I put this in WInXP forum by mistake

Ok guys bear with me, this is my first attempt at networking. Am trying to link up my new laptop to my PC, both systems using XP Pro, home PC FAT32 laptop NTFS. Using a crossover cable, have used the networking wizard and i have manually set the IP addresses/subnet mask. From the laptop i can see the home PC in my network places but cannot access it. Can't see anything from the home PC. I can ping the computers in either direction. I was trying to set up a shared folder but i think i messed it up. any advice would be appreciated.

Are there shared files on both mechines? (gives you somthing to see insome cases)

Can you play a LAN Game<> together? (with the ping connection should be there)

Are you both part of the same workgroup?(may avoid some permissions)

are both pc's named? (shot in the dark)

Hi Fudtone

I'm assuming their are share files as they have the hand underneath them.
Don't understand question 2

Yes for the other two, named the workgroup HOME and named both PC & laptop

It sounds like you are approaching it the right way (i'm getting stumped)

do either mechines have a software firewall enabled? (possible needs to trust other machines IP)

Install NETBEUI protocol on both machines. Here's Microsoft's page on the topic: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;301041
