Can a crossover cable be used as a Cat5?

cat-5 is the type of cable it is.

there are differant types of cable

cat-2
cat-3
cat -5

the way the connectors are wired on the ends of the cable is what determins wheather it is a stright through cable or a crossover cable
on the cross over some of the pin are wired differant than the other end of the cable is.

a stright through camle all the pins are wired the same on both ends.
the cable is still cat-5 it is the type of cable it is.

Your home phone cabling is likely Category 1 and uses RJ-11 connectors; smaller than the RJ-45 used in networking. Some commercial installations use Category 3 cabling for telephone connections. Major network connections cannot be made with Category 1; use only Category 3 or 5.

Category 3 -- Category 3 is used for network and data transmission operating at 10 Mbps. Category 3 should never be used with 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet networks.
Category 5 -- Category 5 is required for network and data transmission operating at 100 Mbps (Fast Ethernet). This cable grade can be used successfully for 10 Mbps operation, but it is slightly more expensive than Category 3. If you will be upgrading to 100Mbps in the near future, you should consider installing your network with Category 5 cable now.

A crossover cable can be used as a standard straight cable only if you plug one end into a crossover port on your hub/switch/router.

Actually Cat5e works for Gigabit also. Little bit easier to pull too.
