greedo Modem keeps disconnecting

I am working on a friends computer and this is what it is doing. You connect to the net using his dial up isp and everything goes fine for about 5-10 minutes and then it will say page not found or simply disconnect alltogether. I not real sure what to do about this. Any help would be great.

Some thoughts, in no particular order. Make sure incoming phone is plugged in to "line" port on modem, not "phone". Check device manager for conflict. Did modem come in the machine or was it added? Either way check modem manufacturer or emachine site for latest driver. Maybe run Internet connection set up wizard again to reestablish the path. Possibility that ISP is at fault.

In the extra settings box, under Advanced modem properties in device mangler, put this: S10=50S11=50
See if that helps.

Is this a new problem, or has it been happening to your friend all along?

If it's the factory E-machine modem, it's a cheap Winmodem. If he is condemned to dialup, $40 for a USR 2977 is a good investment.

I would just suggest buying a lan card and getting cable. Depending on the ISP u will run into problems like that. What ISP is he running? Is it a new ISP and new problem or what?

If all the above recommendations don't still help. Maybe it is time to IPConfig / FLUSH YOUR ISP (just kidding). What ISP you are using now? If it's AOHELL there is a code number 70 to set so as your wont be kicked out when there is an incoming call. You can also download from the Net a freeware to keep you connections alive. HTH.

I am having a similar problem with a friends internet connection running W2000. (posted in Windows NT, 2000, and XP forum). In his case after about 5min his I.Explorer seems to slow right down yet his modem is still sending and receiving data even when we shut I.Explorer shut down. As if something is hogging the connection.
The other case perhaps with a software modem is the operating system needing some maintenance and taking resources from the modem causing problems.

med, maybe spyware running in background. It could be sending its info after IE is down. Try Adaware.

Yes adaware found five problems and sorted them out and the computer dials up o.k now. I also found five viruses after installing AVG anti-virus. One of these was a trojan back door
SVCINIT.EXE . These have now been dealt with. I don't know how this virus got on his PC as he says he has not downloaded any thing or gone on to any dodgy web sites.
A couple of worm viruses Nachi and Lovsan.a also.
Thanks for the good advice.
Mike.

Disconnecting On Dial UP

Can adware/spyware make you disconnect? I have having a horrid time staying connected. I have tried the advanced modem conf. I have tried the flushing config. I have installed spyware search and distroy and am now trying to down load the spycatcher. I have tried to download several virus programs but cannot stay connected anywhere near long enough. If I know for sure it would help I would go pick one up at the store. Any ideas? I know I have something on here I have tried numerous programs and they have all found something that the other didnt find but I still have the staying connected problems. I also have a easy search thing on my explorer when I open it and my search panel is never where I leave it.....Maybe a virus and not spyware or adware??? WWWAAAAaaaaaa
