Wireless Access Point
Wireless Acces Point
I already own this so I know it works great. Here is the deal; we go to our inlaws a lot, and my wife already setup a router to their cable modem. Now we were thinking of setting up a wireless access point to their existing router and use our laptops and Ipaq to connect to it. However, being that we are only going to benefit from it when we are there (which is not as much as when we are from home) we do not want to put too much money into it. Newegg is selling it for $69, has anyone seen it cheaper? |

Pricegrabber shows it as low as $59.95, but not with free shipping. You might want to check out Ebay.
Why don't you just bring yours with when you visit? It should fit in a laptop bag easily. |

I was debating on doing that, just thought it would be easier to just have it there ready and waiting. But knowing my father-inlaw, he won't be able to resist and start messing with it, and when I get there I will have to fix all the settings again.

Will selling the Wired Router and getting a new Wireless Router with Switch is more practical and economical? The cost of AP and Wireless Router is almost the same or sometimes cheaper. Just another thought.

Not in my opinion; why pay for something that you already have. If you already have a router, why replace it and then left with decision of what to do with the router replaced. This way that dilema is not there and you have the best of both worlds.

I did and most of my friends too replaced their Wired Router for convenience and upgrades. I kept my old router for back up purposes just in case something happens in the future with my Wireless Router.
As I see now, BestBuy is selling that AP and the Wireless Router with Switch @ $69.00. Hmm? How about donating the Wired Router for a good cause? Just kidding, but am sure if you will offer that for sale especially with a good bargain price, a taker will pop up. |

Problem is - the Linksys BEFW11S4 version 4 wireless router (current version) is a LEMON - bad firmware. The BEFSR41 and WAP11 combo works a lot better. Until recently, I've sold strictly Linksys routers but have switched to D-Link for wireless routers till Linksys gets their $#1t together. I still stick with Linksys wired routers and standalone access points. I also use D-Link when the customer wants a print server - Linksys has no routers with print server yet.
I installed a DI-714+ yesterday - its a nice unit. Edit - if you leave a WAP11 there, your f-i-l can't mess with its settings if you don't leave him the CD. It doesn't have a web server you can surf into like a router, you have to run the CD. Last edited by glc; 09-26-2003 at 11:14 AM. |

Since I just bought the D-Link DI-614+ wireless router for $15 after rebate, I can't see the wisdom of buying a $60 piece of equipment when a $15 one will do the job! As for worrying about what you do with the old router, I can only hope you're kidding, put it in the trash if you can't think of something creative.

No I am not kidding. Why throw and not use something that would cost someone $60 to use. I try to use my equipment to it's full life span. I don't like throwing things away or having more than one of something.

Let me try to understand this view. You'd spend $60 to get the same functionality as you can get for $15, only because you'd have a piece of equipment that you don't currently have a use for? With that kind of logic, retailers must really love to see you coming!

Listen, just because you do not agree with the logic does not make it wrong. Remember, we all have our ways to do things and our opinions; the thing that is appreciated most around here is you respecting that.
Thank You |

Just because you don't agree with my analysis, that doesn't make me wrong either. We most certainly do all have our own opinions, and when you post for comments in a public forum, you'll get a number of opinions, some you won't like. That's tough, you'll have to live with it or keep such thoughts to yourself.
I half expected you'd come up with some semi-logical reason for your stance, but you let me down.
