Network via sweex router for XP and 98 PC's
Hi,
I've got cable and I placed a router between the acces point and 2 PC's (one PII with Win98SE and one P4 with WinXP Home ed.). Sharing the internet was't a problem. Now I was trying to setup a network so I could share files between both PC's. I set up the router and made sure I had a domain name entered. I don't know what DHCP is but that's enabled(default). I also don't know what "lease time" is but that's set to one week (default). I managed to set-up Win98 by adding a new TCP/IP protocol and setting the correct IP,Gateway and Subnetmask data. I believe Win98 is networked now because I see "//name of my pc" in the network folder. I set up XP by using the wizard to add a connection and I selected "create home network or small bussines network" (I don't know the exact translation cause I've got a Dutch version of XP). I did that and a network bridge was made. Then I went to the network folder and tried to acces my domain but I was refused acces. I don't know why. I hope somebody can help me out. I'm a bit stuck here cause I'm just learning this networking stuff. Thanks for any replies. Greetz, PiC |

I tried that link but I couldn't find a solution for my situation. Maybe somebody can help me with some tips.
The IP adres for the router is 192.168.2.1. Every PC connected to the router onto the domain MOORST lies in an adrespool 192.168.2.100 to 192.168.2.199. The subnetmask is 255.255.255.0 and the DHCP server option on the router is enabled. I believe this is al correct for the router right? I just can't set up my PC's properly I need some tips. I tried several things but it's not working. I don't kow what I'm doing wrong. PiC |

This may be a stupid question but have you made sure file and print sharing is installed? On 98 to check right click on My network places and choose properties, and double click tcp/ip. Also make sure that the computers workgroup is set correctly on both pc's.
By the way DHCP or dynamic host configuration protocol, can be used to automatically assign IP addresses, to deliver TCP/IP stack configuration parameters such as the subnet mask and default router, and to provide other configuration information such as the addresses for printer, time and news servers. lease time is how long the router will hold an Ip address. I checked file sharing and printer sharing.
I also made sure the workgroup was entered corectly. Something just came into my mind, my Norton Internet Security 2003 on my XP machine. Could that cause problems? I use Norton Internet Security 2001 on my PII btw. I reset everything on both PC's I'm starting all over now. First the router. Which is allready set-up properly. Now I'm gonna set-up XP by adding a connection via the wizard. After that I'll check back. PiC |

First off, I'd forget about the network wizards.
Since you have a router with DHCP, all you need to do to get IP addresses assigned is to configure TCP/IP for automatic assignment of the IP and DNS addresses. Make sure that NETBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled in the TCP/IP Advanced properties, and you should be sharing. Obviously, you need to enable File & Print sharing on the computer. IMO, NIS is a bloated pig, I have a copy of that resting comfortably in my CD drawer, never to see the light of day again! I'd remove ALL firewalls and get the file sharing working first, then you can experiment with them if you feel the need. |

If you have not done this yet, install Netbuie on both machines this will meke it easier to file shares and it's not routable which gives you a 'lil sense of security while on the Net. Then create in XP the same account name that you use in your 98 Machine. Try disabling first your Firewalls while dong the troubleshooting.

I solved the problem. How could I overlook the firewall, it's the second time I overlooked it :s. LOL
I let Norton permit activity over the given IP adresses and everything worked. Sorry for all the confusion, and many thanks for everybodies patience. I can be a pain in the .... well you know what (otherwise it wouldn't show up I think) ![]() The network works excellent. Just one thing that botters me is that I can't directly see the printer on the Win98 machine (from my XP machine). Many thanks to all the help guys. This forum is just great But I allready knew that ![]() PiC |

And now that the network is up and running I was wondering if there are some programs to monitor and control functions on the Win 98 system (from the Win XP system).
I still haven't found a way to see that printer. Can somebody give me a clue? Thanks, PiC |

Yes I was able to do that. Both PC's have a printer and I was able to share them both. I haven't learned this muuch in one day about computers in a long time LOL.
Just one little weird problem. Afterwards the router went down or something. I couldn't connect to the router so I reset it and entered all the data. Everything worked again. ![]() PiC |

Kudos! Nice to know that you have done it thru this Forum.
This is one of the reasons whyI am still visiting this site for many years now? Wow! I did not notice it was long time already. On Modem and Router 'lil glitch, it helps always to power off both and reboot the Machine. |

Yep that's what I did to, but it didn't work so I reset the whole router. Practice makes perfect they say hehe LOL
I also love this forum, and as a Dutchman I really feel good around the people over here. I like his forum more then any other forum in the Netherlands covering hardware. I almost never had a problem I couldn't solve via this forum. And if I couldn't solve a problem that would because of not reaching the forum because my internetconnection was down. ![]() Just one question about the printers btw: I can't create a password for my XP connected printer (HP deskjet 3820). I tried to do this by pressing CTRL and rightciliking the printer. But there is no Security tab or something where I can enter a password. On the 98 machine however I can set a password for the printer connected on that machine (HP deskjet 720C). PiC |
