network printer connection

Hi. I am not sure if this is the correct forum for this, but here goes... I am a Windows Xp user and my husband uses a Mac OSX. We are connected to the same modem and rooter... Anyway, we are trying to connect my computer to his printer through the internet. Windows xp has an 'add printer wizard' which we follow, entering the URL address for the printer. However, we keep getting an error message stating 'unable to find printer. please check spelling of address.' So we call the Mac people tp confirm the correct address- which is correct. We are at our wits end... any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

I think you're going to need a printer server.

You can see some here: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...inter%2Cserver

Hi. Thanks for your help. Another question though... I thought the Mac would be the server since the printer is connected to it? Also, when what exactly is an SMB network printer?

To tell you the truth, i'm not an network expert, just my suggestion (That may or may not be correct) was to get a network file server.

I'm not sure if this can be done or not without one.

open add printer select "local printer" untick auto detect, then when it asks you to select the port us want to use select create a new port then select tcp/ip and then add the ip address of the printer you want to connect to , then install the driver when asked.

hope this helps

failing that you may need to have some printer networking software on installed, although i have realy only seen this on win95 machines another thing is (not knowing anything about macs) is he able to share the printer, if not and it dont have its own ip address then xp aint gunna see it.

So i just asked the question to a friend and he said on the mac under system preferences share the printer, then you have to turn on sharing on the xp machine to enable printing to shared printers.

Well thats all i can do for you tonight,
