Linksys Wireless Network Problems
i'm back again...here's the background:
i've got a wireless network setup with a Linksys BEFW11S4 Wireless Router. the wireless connection works on three laptops we use throughout the house. i recently built a new computer (Shuttle SB61G2/Pentium 4 C 2.4GHz/WMP54G Linksys Wireless PCI Adapter). this computer sees the network SSID and gets an IP address, however whenever explorer tries to access any web page, it tries, and tries, and tries, and then finally just gives me the "This web page cannot be found" deal. This also happens with our Network when trying to access it with Windows Explorer, so it is not just an IE problem. now i know it isn't the PCI card, because i had it replaced to have the same problem. plus, i booted up the computer using Knoppix and everything worked fine. so it must be a software problem within Windows XP. is it something to do with my using an 802.11g card with an 802.11b router? i've tried changing all the RTS Threshold and Fragmentation and all those other settings around to no avail. i've even connected a USB 802.11b Wireless Adapter up and it is still incredibly slow to the point it's useless. please help me guys, i can't figure this one out...i've been all over the Linksys site and found nada. i've installed and reinstalled the drivers, even reformatted the computer. nothing works. this is my mother's computer and i'd like to keep her faith in my building ability. any help at all would be highly welcome. if you've read this whole thing, thank you... josh |

This is not particularly helpful I know - but get rid of XP and put Win2K on - it doesn't fight you when you try to network it. I have a customer with the same issue on a XP box and I'm getting ready to do just that.

blargh...heheh, thanks glc, i don't think my mom could handle going back to a non-luna gui though. i'll have to find some way to route some good ol' CAT-5 through the walls.

If your BEFW11S4 is Version 4, that's your problem - it's a lemon.

where do i check the version number? i updated the firmware recently, but i don't think that was a v4...where on the router would the version number be? thanks GLC,
josh btw: this router works with many other computers just fine, would it just decide not to work for a specific machine? |

The version # should be on the bottom of the router.

Have you tried checking how many network keys are being distributed? Make sure you have enough. You may only have three. Good luck.

have you tried going to start button,, run ,, cmd.... type "ipconfig /release" then "ipconfig /renew"
in XP. go to my network connections... "set up home or small office network" options through a "residential gateway" on the router.... make sure that you go to "status" , "local network" and hit dchp client table button..... is the lap top showing up on the lan?ifyou are there, then its a matter of telling XP to set up the network via the network connections window also \, make sure you do not have this PC lan IP excluded from your exceptions list on any personal firewall softwae on the PC |

Why have you folks resurrected a 6 month old thread when we have had no feedback from the originator since?
