Hi,
I was just asked by someone if these new faster dial up ISP services like fast Net Zero $14.95, is really any faster? As I understand it, it loads web pages faster but does not increased download or upload speeds. Is this right? If so is there really an appreciable difference and is it worth the extra $5? TIA

If it's dial up then I don't see any way it could go beyond 56k....

True, but that's what they claim, web pages open faster. They do say downloads are not speeded up.

Faster dial up connections beyound 56k are not truly possible, based on FCC rules.
The way services such as NetZero are acheiving faster web page loading is caching all links as the original loads. That way the page seems to load faster. Any internet service has that capability if they choose to do it. |

There is no real advantage, in all actuallity you will probably see a slower response and load time on every other page as you load all the links available.
The service will become faster as you visit the same sites frequently because you cache files will "remember" where you have been and where you will "probably" be going. |

It depends on what you use the web for... if you're using it for serious browsing, yes... but if it's just casual browsing, or downloading files.. then no.
but that's just my opnion |

You can also find caching software for your system that does the same thing, but doesn't line the pockets of the various ISP's that are stealing from the uninformed.

Unless you have a modem from the stone age, it already does compression. The only significant improvement possible is caching images and the like...
