ICS....I Can't Surf
Hi,
Don't tell me ICS works because I've tried it with 2k and now with XP.....and might as well have been pi$$ing against the wind. First I had two 2k PCs. Got as far as getting the modem on the host PC to dial (using the ICS floppy) but no connection to the internet! Main PC has a modem connection but this was meant to be sorted out with this 'floppy'. Tried this again a few times with ICS floppy......forget it! Now I have two XPpro PCs. Same rigs but just XP. Tried again but, funnily enough, no joy either. Followed the install from the Help to the letter several times and rebooted yet again. Same modem, same crap..... Am I missing something ?......has this topic been browsed upon before.....apologies if it has....but does this 'thing' actually work ie: ICS?? |

Micro$oft ICS works, but not so well. Did you try the link below already?

Hi jeresimo,
Tried that too and everything else before. Think it's a bit of a damp squib if you ask me! The thing doesn't (and never has) worked for me and my system is just two PC's on a LAN. Go figure....... |

I have never used the floppy to configure ICS on clients - I just enable DHCP and it works fine.
I have a PPPoE DSL connection here, I'm using RASPPPoE on Win2K, which works just like dialup networking. I have ICS sharing it out to a second nic - and when I hook up a second machine I just set it to use DHCP and it connects fine as soon as I lower the Internet settings in ZA to Medium. I do this frequently - whenever I have a machine on the bench, there's a crossover cable just hanging there ready to go. |

Hi glc,
Back track there just a mo. Both of my PC's do NOT have fixed ip's abd are connected using a cross-over cable. Are you saying just enable dhcp (which is already enabled seeing as how neither PC has a fixed IP) and just try to connect..? Well I'm sorry but this may work on an isdn server but it doesn't seem to work on my PC.....with either Win2k or XP. Like I said previously, am I missing something here (and with no disrespect to glc insinuated)

When you enable ICS on the "server", it sets the NIC to static 192.168.0.1 and provides DHCP services to clients. If you are manually changing the TCP/IP properties of the nic in your "server" (ICS host) this WILL break ICS.

Hi,
OK. I have 2 PC's linked with a cross-over cable. Why cant' ICS work here when local lan stuff does? I'm sorry glc but I'm up for any info... It doesn't work. Both PC are admin login. Shouldn't be a problem then........? |

Hi,
Did you manually assign the second pc (the one that does not have the modem) an IP address? If so, you have two options: 1) Remove that address and enable DHCP or 2) Enter the IP of the "server" under Gateway. HTH |

Fredwest - you have to enable ICS on the sharing tab of the dialup (modem) connection, BUT select the LAN interface, i.e. the NIC, NOT the modem interface.. This assigns 192.168.0.1 to the NIC, DHCP should still work as long as the "server" IP i.e. 192.168.0.1 is specified as "gateway" on the client. Personally I found it easier to use fixed IP's of 192.168.0.x for the client PC's on my home network.
