Wireless card can't see access point
I recently formatted my friend's hard drive and reinstalled windows after it refused to start. I got the computer working again, but now I can't get his internet running like it used to. He has a linksys WPC11 instant wireless card and I installed the drivers. The computer recognizes the card and says it is working properly, but it says a networking cable is unplugged. The manual talks about a dual monitor icon that should pop up in the taskbar, but there is no such icon appearing. One forum on linksys's site said something about enabling Microsoft Wireless Zero Configuration and that it could be seen in msconfig. I ran msconfig and he doesnt have it. Even I have it on my computer, and I don't have wireless networking. How can I get his internet back up and running? Or at least, how can I load Wireless Zero Configuration onto his computer?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Did you follow the install sequence for the card EXACTLY?
If so, you should be able to go into network and dialup connections - and right click on the wireless connection, go to properties, and you will be looking at the zero config utility. |

The OS is windows XP home and I followed the instuctions, but chouldnt the zero config be viewable in msconfig? It wasn't there at all. The computer is a gateway but i dont think that should make a difference...

Do you have encryption enabled or disabled?

i think encryption is disabled, but shouldnt the card still see that there is some kind of connection? And linksys tech support said zero config would be in msconfig and it is on my other computer

Remove and re-insert the Wireless NIC again. Power up and wait XP blows a balloon and tells you that it detects the newly installed device. From there go to: Click Start, Connect To, Wireless Network Connection. Then choose from the menu CONNECT TO /SHOW ALL CONNECTIONS. Follow the instructions there until the two Monitor ICON shows up. HTH

when you say wireless nic, do you mean the part that actually touches the pci port or the pc card that plugs into it? I've tried taking out the pc card and no balloon or icon shows up.

This is a WPC11 and a PCI adapter? Those things do not work well - best thing to do is get a WMP11 dedicated PCI card - that adapter is difficult to get the card seated properly. You have to reseat 2 things - the adapter in the PCI slot, then the card in the adapter.

Okay, i'll take out and put the adapter back in, the WPC11 worked ok before formatting his hard drive so it should work now.

A thought - you *should* have removed the card and adapter when you reformatted and reinstalled - then followed the instructions for a new card install.
