I need help with ping lag please

ok i dont know very much on the subject of ping lag, but i know for sure that it happens to be based off of your connection. right now i am running on 56k with my isp as netzero high speed. i am running on this semi ancient model; compaq presario 2266. i know laugh it up but i am in the airforce and it was given to me by my former roomate who is now in iraq. ok now onto the real question, i like to play alot of online games but i am suffering horribly from ping lag. its about 400 and everything jumps so much that its just completely annoying especially after a tires day of work. i was wondering if there are any possible ways of improving my lag without having to completely buying a new connection. do you think that buying more ram could help out with my problem? anyone advice will be much appreciated

Not really much you can do on a dialup connection... the only thing that is gonna improve it would be to go broadband.

400 ping is about right.

When I used to think I had a good connection it would vari from 250-600.

I belive in DC you can get celular DSL. Normaly cheeper than other broadbands.

If it's a software controlled "winmodem" you can improve things somewhat with a hardware controlled modem, that's about it.

The "high speed" option for Netzero does absolutely nothing for you in respect to this issue - it's just a caching system for web pages, the raw connection is still the same old connection and the Netzero software is putting quite a load on the CPU whether it's Free, Platinum , or High Speed. You would enhance what you have best by using an ISP that can use standard DUN connections without proprietary software (such as Earthlink) and do NOT install the offered software.
