I am trying to establish a peer to peer network connection between the notebook that I use in my office (Windows 2000) with my home computer (Windows XP Pro).
I have talked to our office network support person and they made a few suggestions on how to to this but nothing has worked to date. The problems seems to be that my home computer cannot get security access to the office notebook. It asks for a domain but then says that it does not have sufficient rights. I can access the office network from the home computer via VPN but so far have been unable to access the office notebook files from the home computer. All I really want to do is to be able to transfer files between the computers and access the home computer's printer when I am at home. Thanks for the help. |

It would really help if you specified the type of Internet connection you have at home and at the office. Also, what kind of firewall/gateway are you accessing the work computers through. If the network folks at the office can't help you connect, that's pretty scary!

It has been my general experience that office tech support folks are only real good at solving very simple problems. If it's a bit unusual, it becomes a major research project with potentially unknown results 9or more likely no results).
I am connecting to the internet at home through a Linksys wireless broadband router connected to a cable modem. I connect at our office to the internet through our LAN. As I indicated, I have no trouble connecting through the internet with a VPN connection from home. Our office uses a firewall, although I am not sure how this would impact on my problem which is how do I establish a peer to peer network connection between my office computer (while it is in my home) and my home computer. I can connect the office notebook computer to the internet via the broadband router but I can't access any of the files on my home computer or use the home computer's printer. Thanks |

You say you have a VPN to the office that functions. Can you access files on your office server(s) through the VPN? If so, and you've shared resources on the machine in the office, I'm not sure why you can't access them, that should be all that's required.
OTOH, if you can't access any servers or files on the office network, what is the VPN connecting you to? |

The office network person is being paid to do this work, so let him do it. If he can't, get a new tech person because this is very simple stuff.
Maybe he won't because it is against company policy for you to share your office machine with your home machine. Is that the case?

No, networking with my home machine is not an issue. She just hasn't been able to make anything work to date.
I guess I'll just have to keep bugging her for a solution. She's actually pretty good with the stuff here in the office. Thanks for your help. |
