Wireless comp cannot ping wired computer
I recently replaced my linksys router with a Uniden WNR2004 router. (http://www.uniden.com/productsupport...roduct=WNR2004)
It is a broadband router (connected to my cable modem) 802.11b WAP, and 4port 10/100 switch built in one box. Connecting to it is: a desktop running Win 2000 through 10/100 my TiVo (basically a linux box) also 10/100 and a laptop also running Win 2000 through a Uniden PCW 300 - 802.11b PCMIA card (http://www.uniden.com/productsupport...product=PCW300) The routers lan IP is 192.168.1.1 - subnet 255.255.255.0 The router is also acting as a DHCP server. The desktop and TiVo get IPs from the router based on their MAC address so they will stay at the same IP. The desktop gets ip: 192.168.1.110 - Subnet 255.255.255.0 The TiVo gets 192.168.1.100 - Subnet 255.255.255.0 The laptop gets whatever ip it gets from the server. Usually 192.168.1.101 (DHCP set to start at 192.168.1.100) Of course subnet 255.255.255.0 Ok, all three of the above can connect to the internet. The two computers can ping the router and access it's internal setup screens. ( I assume the TiVo can as well, I just don't have ping installed to try.) The desktop Can ping the TiVo and access servers running on it (ftp, telnet, etc.) However, here's the problem, The desktop cannot ping the laptop, and the laptop cannot ping the desktop or TiVo. The laptop cannot access any of the TiVo's servers, and neither of the Win 2000 machines show up on the other's "network neighborhood". ALL firewall software (zone alarm, etc.) was disabled during my attemts. The Win 2000 machines both have unique computer names, and are set with the same workgroup name. I have also downloaded the latest firmware for the router, and the latest drivers for the wireless PCMIA card. Windows Updates have all been performed. What am I missing? Is it possible that Uniden (the router) has made it impossible for the wireless to see the wired and vice versa? I called their tech support, but the heard that I am online and said that was the extent of their support. Thanks in advance, -craig |

Check the wireless configuration in the router. If you are truly disabling ALL of the firewalls, that would seem to be the only place that the ICMP requests could be blocked.

I have looked through the entire router configuration. Most items are still default. I could find nothing to prevent my wireless to ping the wired.
There is nothing preventing one wired from pinging another wired, as my desktop can ping my TiVo. This is my first wireless experience, perhaps I am missing something obvious. Unfortunately, there is only one wireless computer, so I cannot see if wireless can see another wireless. It may also be that the laptop is configured incorectly, causing the desktop to not see it. (having nothing to do the fact that it is wireless.) Any ideas? |

I'm afraid I don't have any more ideas. The fact that you can access the Internet makes it obvious that there is two-way IP communications taking place from the wireless station, so there has to be something blocking the ICMP request from the wired station to the wireless one. The two places that can happen are in the router and a firewall of some sort in the wireless computer.

Update
As it stands, The two wired computers can ping each other, making me believe they have no problems and are working correctly.
This makes be think the problem is in the laptop or the router. Last night, I formatted the laptop's HD and re-installed Win2000. and the network card ONLY! Same results. Drastic - perhaps, But Now I am most certain it is not in the laptop. I have sent an e-mail to UNIDEN requesting technical support describing the problem and linking to this web site. That was about 36 hours ago. I will post back any reply I get. As well as any solution that works. -craig |

I've never seen the Uniden router, so I'm not at all aware of it's capabilities.

It's a UNIDEN Thing -- NO ONE understands
Well, OK.
After e-mailing tech support on Wed night, I received an automated reply stating that I would receive a response within 24 hours. It's saturday evening now... I took my chances calling UNIDEN's tech support AGAIN. This time I got someone who wanted to help. It appears that this is a common problem. And that a fix is being looked into. So I received a case # and was told that this will be elivated to level 2 Tech support. I also had to mention the other problems I had. including the fact that the on-screen setup did not work properly with I.E. but worked with Mozilla. (Which is unusually backwards.) Also ahad to question the wording on the wireless setup screen. There is an option that says: Stop Transmit Beacon [Enable / Disable] She asked a level 2 person, and was told that Disable does stop the beacon... Does anyone know a way to test this? I should have spent twice the money and gotten a Linksys or something. |

Well, I figured it had to be in the router if you didn't have any firewalls.

Well for the last several days, I have been in contact with UNIDEN. Here is the rundown.
The latest firmware update (1.8) was released to fix something stupid that AOL did. (go figure.) The tech support believes that this update is what is causing me to have this problem (and apparently a few other people as well.) They have been talking about e-mailing me a firmware update (well... downdate) of version 1.7. They think this will fix my problem. I will let you know. Of course there is only 2 people at UNIDEN that have access to the old version, and they aren't in... So still waiting. |

There was a free after rebate deal on several Uniden network components, and I was tempted to get it, just out of curiousity.
Glad I didn't bother!

Newer is not always better
Well, I received the e-mail today. Flashed the firmware and am now running at Version 1.7
Good News! It works. I have successfully transfered files between the laptop and desktop. Just goes to show you that the newest version isn't always the best! |

I am working with version 1.02 and this problem was solved enabling explicitly ICMP trafic to the lan (seems it is blocked by default)
the rule shows as: 1 Enable 192.168.1.1 ~ 192.168.1.254 0 192.168.1.1 ~ 192.168.1.254 0 ICMP LAN I have no problem whith this cheap Wireless AP with version 1.02 What are the benefits on the upgrading? I heard it is not good idea to upgrade, but there is new features in v1.07 or v1.08 that v1.02 does not include? |
