Xp and 98
This isn't urgent right now, because we aren't going to network them until we get a new screen, but I want to be prepared. I have one windows xp machine and one 98. I networked them a while ago but it didn't exactly work. My xp machine could see the 98 machine and take its files, which was what I wanted so that was ok. But the 98 machine couldn't see the xp machine. I used the setup disk xp told me to use, and the network card is xp compatible, so whats the problem? Also if I set this up (2 computers and a crossover cable) could I login to this computer from the other computer or would that need a dedicated server?
Edit: Knew I forgot something, when I turn on the computers they go straight to desktop because I set them to. Does this matter when setting up the network? |

Find out the IP address of the XP machine by running ipconfig in the command prompt. Then on the 98 machine go to run and type in the ip address. See if that works.
There is a program that lets you control the desktop of your other machine but I forget the name of it (Active Desktop??????) |

I suspect the reason is that the XP firewall is turned on, which will block file sharing to the XP machine.
Oh, the program to access the other machine is UltraVNC, it works on all Windows versions, as well as Linux and other Unix variations. ![]() |

When I say lgin to the other computer I mean when a box comes up asking me to type my username and password, then I can login.

You just need to have an account on the computer with the shared resource that matches the name/password you logon to the client computer with, then then you'll be allowed immediate access to the shared resource.

ric449, I think what you are talking about is when you are on the Win98 box you get a network login box, right? If this is what you mean, this does not "log you in to the other computer" exactly. This logs the workstation user into the network workgroup.
