Wireless b router connection???

Hello All:
I've just recently went with the Linksys BEFW11S4 wireless router. It seems that most everytime we boot up my wife's laptop, (Sony VIAO), with WinXP home, and push the card in it says all is well good signal strength and connected and all, but I can't actually do anything over the LAN, not even ping the router. Rebooting the router is what works everytime though, it's almost like for some reason the router wants to be the one to establish the connection. Doesn't seem to matter if I boot up with the card in or push it in after bootup. I'm using static IP on an AVAYA wireless pcmcia card and have the box checked to let winXP detremine the wireless configuration. Using channel 6 on the router with no encryption or anything but the basic default settings for now...I havn't tried it as much but it doesn't seem that my other laptop with win2000 is having the same trouble...Any thoughts..!!

Yeah - take the router back if it's a version 4 and get something else. That model is a lemon.

Thanks GLC , that is the exact model I got, trying to save a buck again, (I'll never learn). The guy at Best Buy even tried to talk me into a g router but I said whats the point since my dsl is 1.5 meg. I just wandered over to your other post in which you also stated that:

If you want a Linksys wireless router, I'd recommend the new "G" series (WRT54G) - the BEFW11S4 version 4 "B" series seems to have a lot of issues, it appears to be a lemon. You can use a "B" or a "G" adapter with it, "G" is backwards compatible.

If you want to save a buck, the D-Link "B" series routers are very inexpensive and work very well. I've switched to those recently and have had very good results. The only downsides I've found is they don't support passphrase generation for WEP keys, you have to dream up a hex key - and if it's a "+" series router (enhanced 22 or 44 mbps) you have to disable the 2X or 4X mode to connect to a different brand card or a non "+" series D-Link card.
