Accessing the internet is the same, be it on a laptop or a desktop.
(a) you need an Internet service provider
(b) you need a modem to access the internet by dialling into the provider (check ur laptop manual to see if u have a modem already built in)
or
if you have a network card (again check the manual) you can use it to access the internet - a lot of hotels etc. provide the internet a broadband connection
or
if you have a wireless connection, you might find a wireless hotspot where you are.

Mind you, even if you dont have one of the above components, you could always buy an add-on device that will do the job.

I cannot even begin to explain to you the # of ways you can access the internet (for example, I usually use my cell fone as a GPRS modem for my laptop). So if you want specifics you will need to give us specifics about how to access the internet (diallup, broadband etc etc) and what laptop you have.

Probably you will be using dial-up when your on the road and you probably have a modem built in to the laptop, so the biggest part is to be sure and dial in before you leave home and find out the local dial-up access numbers that your internet provider may have in the local area where you are going to be. Otherwise you can incurr some pretty heavy phone toll charges, especially from a hotel if the number is not local to where you are going..Setting it up is easy, just use the networking wizard to creata a new dial up connection and put in the desired phone number, your user name and password and just remember from most hotels you have to dial 9 first to get an outside line...

I have HP Pavilion ZT3010EA. On specifications it says V92 ready modem and 10/100 LAN Ethernet integrated.
The thing that I don't understand is since it is a built in modem how am I going to attach it to the phone line ? Via the USB ports? When I take it to my friend's house which is next to my house how am I going to connect
to Internet? I am very confused.

You just need a phone cord and you just plug into the available phone jack. Look on the back you should see a little phone jack type looking hole that will accept a standard phone cord...

Then you will need a wireless access point and a wireless network device.

At least right now though dial-up is still the most likely and practical way you are going to get connected while on the road...I've been in some of the hotels that offer a lan connection but is was quite pricey to hook up to it, but then I was able to see several different computers of different hotel guests, and even access their shared folders. Not sure how that worked, but just beware of security concerns when you start hooking into other networks. At least dial up is secure...
