ADSL Internet Connection in Hotel

I have my laptop connected to the Internet via a network in my home to my PC which is connected to BT Openworld using ADSL.

When away from home with the laptop I use a normal Dial Up Connection into a Telephone Socket to the local Compuserve node.

Both above work fine and usually when in a Hotel I have to prefix the number dialled for the dial up connection with a 9 to get an outside line and possibly a comma to give a short pause. This works fine.

Recently I was in a Hotel which had a permanent high speed connection socket in each room and I plugged in the (larger) network connecter into this but the computer would not recognise the connection as I needed to dial a 9 there first. How do you go about doing this when it is a high speed connection and not a dial up connection and the connection uses the Ethernet cable.

You don't dial at all. I suspect you connect directly to your ADSL modem at home, and so your network is expecting to use your name/password from home. In the hotel, they should have DHCP with a full time connection, so your PPPoE client is not needed.
