Pissed Auto connection to internet

I am currently runnning Windows ME (!) and each time I start up the PC I have a program which insists on connecting automatically to the internet. I have been used to Windows XP where you can stop the 'Remote Access Auto Connection Manager' and the problem is solved. I can't seem to find any way of doing this with ME. A search turns up nothing which would appear to do this job.
I know I can remove the offending program but that is admitting defeat and will still leave me vulnerable next time I load up a program which wants to do the same.
I want to connect up when I decide. HELP.

I would scan for viruses and trojans.....

Click on Start->Run and type MSCONFIG. Look in the startup tab to disable this.

Why don't you want to delete the offending program?
Is it something you use?

Thanks guys,
Yes, it is a program I use all the time - Download Accelerator Plus - and I am clear of Viri and Trojans - checked that.

Click on Start->Run and type MSCONFIG. Look in the startup tab to disable this.

Or look in the startup folder and remove the shortcut so that it won't launch at startup.

Control Panel - Internet Options - Connections

Check "never dial a connection".

Go into your dialup networking folder and drag a shortcut to your dialup connection out to the desktop, and connect manually when you want to go on line.
