SYgate necessary when I have gateway firewall?
Im wondering if the sygate firewall that i downloaded for free is really necessary even though i have a 2wire gateway that has a built in firewall enabled. I got it from sbc to share my internet with my other computer.
Sygate has recently given me some problems. Whenever i try to access my hotmail account, the page loads on mozilla firefox but then after a while it reads "page contains no data" I have to set sygate to "allow all" to be able to access the site. No problems with other sites..just hotmail...So im wondering if I can get rid of the sygate if it doesnt really help much since i already have the hardware fireall. Or is there something i can set on sygate to allow access to hotmail..I have already chosen to "allow" most of my internet apps on the sygate..but hotmail is still not accessible |

Here is what I would say, have your 2wire gateway firewall on, and yes I know unless you have a PC in DMZ mode it is on.
I work with 2wire gateways daily with customers, it has a very good firewall. Goto some of the tests on DSL reports that will scan you for open ports and you will pass with a 2wire gateway. Running one on your PC is kinda redundant, but if it makes you feel better go ahead. Personally I feel good behind most routers.

i also did a scan test and these are the results
Conclusion: Possible Problem! We did get information from scanning your ports, this information could encourage attackers to probe further. Do you know why you are advertising these services to the net? perhaps installation of a firewall, or reconfiguration of your firewall to be more secure, would provide peace of mind. TCP ALL : FILTERED No response packet was received. UDP ALL : CLOSED We received a response packet that no service is available. |

Did you have any ports open on your firewall?
I know the 2wire HP has allot of configuration options, if you have any computer in DMZ mode and run a test, you will fail because the test will detect the computer in DMZ mode. Check to see if you have the most up to date Firmware, lastest one I know of is 3.5.5 but that may be for a certain NSP. I know they have different firmwares depending on the ISP/NSP you are connected too. |

if the 2wire firewall will do then im going to go ahead and trash the sygate one. Its just too paranoid...talk about not even being able to log into an email account |

Any Firewall can be set very paranoid.
Beware, uninstalling a firewall may cause no surf problems. Download this and keep it handly just in case you lose surf after uninstall sygate. http://members.shaw.ca/techcd/WinsockXPFix.exe Also before uninstalling sygate, look for the security settings and put them on Low first. |
