Prob Getting Connectivity with Linksys Router and Motorola Cable Modem
Woohoo...upgrade time! Just went from ADSL to Cable at 3x the speed and only $2 more a month.
Lovin' it except for one annoyance. I can't seem to get connectivity through my Linksys BEFSR11 and the Motorola SB5100 Surfboard Cable Modem. ADSL: Cable from NIC to LAN input on router, cable from WAN output on router to ethernet on ADSL modem. Settings as follows: WAN connection type...PPPoE Input password, user name and the router connects to the ADSL server and the server uses DHCP to give your system an IP...I'm connected and having fun. Cable Modem: Cable from NIC to LAN input on router, cable from WAN output on router to ethernet on Motorola modem. Settings as follows: WAN connection type (this may be where I'm screwing up, the router lists Obtain Auto...Static...PPPoE...RAS(for Singtel users only)...and PPTP.) Now cable is a constant connection so I thought it should just start running through the router but it's not. I used every WAN connection type and it's not passing through the router. What gives? I know there has to be something simple I'm missing but it may be early Alzheimer's because it won't pop in my head. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I do believe cable broadband is most usually "Obtain Automatically" Did you try setting the router for obtain automatically then rebooting the router??

Exactly, that was my first inclination, and it didn't connect. So I tried all others, and then went back and did it again, still no go.

Well I'm still not sure what happened but after four hours of plugging away it's finally working...Lord knows how, but it is.

Glad to hear you got it, I forgot to say that I would set for obtain automatically, unplug both modem and router, then plug in the modem and let it sync up, then plug in the router. It may be just because you are a new account it had trouble verifying you the first time..

I think you nailed it on the head there, that's what I finally did. I do believe there was some odd verification process with the ISP naming my router as a second computer.

Yes cable broadband in many cases uses the MAC address of what it sees the first time and if you ever change that out you may have to call them to do a reset on their end. Especially if you had connected up direct to a PC the first time then put the router in place, that would be why you were having trouble..

Most cable macs will reset themselves if you unplug the cable modem for 15 minutes. The days of having to clone a mac into the router are pretty much gone.
