Releasing IP adress

Hi, I have been reading up about just swapping a modem between two computers and it says that you should release you IP adress on the one you are using now. What does this mean and if i did release it, would I be able to get connected on both computers straight after plugging the modem back in, or would i have to 'unrelease' the IP address every time? Tanks very much, Tom

ok, lets try this approch:
why would you even be switching the modem around at all.
why not just leave it in one spot and use a router to hook everything as a network, and forget it foreever.

Your right i should probably get a router, but i thought i only want to download a few things every so often and it will just be cheaper.

If that's all you want to do, use internet connection sharing. All that will cost you is a second NIC and a crossover cable.
