PCs dont recognize each other, internet connection works
Okay I kind of have a complicated setup.
I have a wired Linksys router (BEFSR41) and a wireless-G linksys router (WRT54G). I have 3 PCs I'm trying to network, all running Windows XP. PC-1 and my cable modem is connected to the wired router. I have a cable from the wired router to the wireless routers Internet port. PC-2 is connected to the wireless router via a cable. PC-3 is connected wirelessly to the router. The wireless router is setup as gateway (set in firmware config) and DHCP server disabled (tried turning gateway and DHCP options on and off). All three computers can access the internet but only PC-2 and PC-3 can access each other. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks. |

welcome to pcmech
I think you want the DHCP server to and DNS to be enabled for it to work correctly |

Yes they are in the same workgroup, I found out that I can get them to recognize each other if i dont have the cable from the wired router to the wireless router connected in the internet port of the wireless router. But I lose the Internet connection if its not in the internet port. I want them both to work.

That would be nice but that would require running new cables through my house because where the wired router is located (side of house, so I get a bad signal if I replace wired router with wireless router). I know there is a way to use two routers.

use the wired router as normal with the switch ports and add a wireless axcess point to it for the wireless systems.
do not use two routers, it won't work that way |

Connecting 2 routers step-by-step
Frex and anyone that wants to try this, here is a step-by-step to connect two routers. (I do not recommend having such a network, but anyway...)
1. For Frex's situation you need to take your wireless router, we'll call it router 2 and make sure it is powered on. Make sure nothing is plugged into any of the ports. Hold in the reset button for about 30 seconds. 2. Connect one computer to one of the ports on the back of router 2. (It doesn't matter which port.) 3. Turn on the computer. Make sure you are obtaining a link light for the port you plugged into router 2 to your PC. 4. Once the pc is finished booting, open your favorite browser and type 192.168.1.1 Since the settings were changed back to the defaults Linksys settings there is no username and the password is "admin." 5. Next click on the DHCP tab. 6. Set the DHCP option to "Disable." Press apply. 7. Next click on the "Setup" tab. 8. Change Router 2's LAN IP Address to 192.168.1.2 then click apply. 9. Close your web browser. 10. Unplug the power to both your routers. 11. Take a straight through network cable and plug it into any of the available ports on Router 1 (Ports 1, 2, 3 or 4) plug the other end of the cable into the "Uplink" or port 4 on Router 2. 12. Plug the power cord in to Router 1, then plug Router 2's power cable. You should be able to use ports 1, 2 & 3 on Router 2 for other devices. Here is what your setup should look like: Router 1 LAN IP Address: 192.168.1.1 DHCP Server: Enable Router 2 LAN IP Address: 192.168.1.2 DHCP Server: Disable Hopefully this works for you. If not post and we'll try to help some more! ~Snakeyes |
