do i really need to worry about viruses?

i only use my computer for gaming, web browsing and watching dvds.

if i get a virus and it causes serious damage i can always reinstall XP.

the reason i mention it is that my current anti virus/ firewall seems to cause me graphical lag and when i stop it running i have no such lag.

what anti virus? Windows has quite a few possible viruses you are likely to get with out an anti virus program. seems like a hassle to reinstall every time. If you really don't like your current antivirus you could try AVG, its free. http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php

sounds like Norton Int Sec to me I would try AVG and zone alarm, they hog alot less....I would still keep anti-virus and firewall if possible, there's some nasty things out there that could prevent you from being able to boot and format / reinstall in the worst case scenario

Get ZoneAlarm. It is a good firewall that is not a ressource hog.

As for the AntiVirus, I'd just go ahead and disable it. I don't use AntiVirus in the background, the firewall is pretty good.
I do a virus scan once a week, and it never found something, so there is no need for a permanent AntiVirus IMHO if you have a firewall running.

Try nod32 www.nod32.com you wont even notice its running and better than norton by far IMO(they have a 30-day trial). As for firewall, try XP's built-in firewall, it wont use any resources.

If your really concerned about getting a virus, go to avast.com. they have a good antivirus program that is free. i use it as a backup for my main antivirus. It works very well.thorlo6
