Question new dsl modem, won't work with 12 port hub

we got a new actiontec wireless modem for our dsl line at work. we still use lan cables for connection to our 9 pc,s with win98se.

it replaced a cisco 675 modem that was configured for dynamic ip address's.
previous to that 675 modem over a year ago, we were using static ip's and dns settings and gateway settings.

the install of the new modem connected direct to one pc installed fine for internet access. qwest only supports this config and offers no help for more than 1 pc.

we have 9 pc's running thru a 12 port hub and all was well till the new modem install. network and internet both went down for all pc's when the dsl modem ethernet cable was plugged into the hub.

we reset the ip addresses to static and now the network is working but internet access only works when only the one pc is cabled to the modem.

qwest says the modem is designed for dynamic ip's and may not be compatible with static ip's.

we tried to run the modem thru a 4 port switch with the modem plugged into the wan socket and the pc that worked with direct connection plugged into one of the 4 ports.

it doesn't work either.

what am i missing. i am about to try dynamic ip settings to see if some thing has changed. any ideas??? thankx, ray.

judging from the small amount of views, this section must not much traffic or i'm just lucky enough to get the weird problems.

anyways, the old 12 port hub would not work with the new modem.

changing back to static ip's was a total failure as the new modem didn't support them.

the boss got a new 16 port switch [not the brand and model no. i rec.] and it didn't have any uplink or wan socket.

back in the same boat.

we placed a 4 port switch with wan as a uplink to the modem and booted the devices with modem first, then 4 port sw and then 16 port sw. [i didn't think i should matter but earlier attempts to connect the 4 port sw. to the modem didn't connect right to the one pc we had on the sw.

now to wait to hear back from the network printer tech support as the wrong ip address is saved in memory and i can't delete it so i can run the smartdevicemonitor to search the network and assign a correct ip address to the printer.

joy for joy, ray.

.

Have you tried disabling DHCP?

I think we'd need to know a bit more about the DSL service. The cisco 675 is a router with NAT and DHCP services, what is the capability of the new DSL modem, does it have an embedded router? Could it be that you're just using it incorrectly? Of course, since you didn't provide any model number, it's hard to know what you really have. Would it make sense to put a router in front of the switch to provide NAT and DHCP services?

Yep, sounds to me like you need a router between the modem and your hubs/switches. The new modem is probably either a simple bridge or something like Earthlink's UHP, which is NAT but will only allow one connection at a time. At least the Earthlink UHP can be switched to bridge mode to be used with a standard router.

A bit of advice, after the fact unfortunately - I do onsite support for AOL DSL, and they used to send out Actiontec modems in the install kits - they are total garbage. At least half of my calls were to replace modems. Now that they are using Broadxent Broadband Blasters and Westell C90's, I haven't had to replace one yet.

i picked up a linksys 4 port dsl router and all is well. the old cisco must have had the necessary protocols cause it was the only hdwe connected to our 12 port hub.
now we have the new modem connected to our linksys router and then on to a dlink 16 port switch. [finally somewhat modern]

that was fun. thankx,ray.

The Cisco was a router as well as a modem, that's the difference.

sure was nice of them to send us a cheaper item with less functionality and still charge us for the hardware . [ and then tell us on the phone that they don't offer any support for problems that arise out of the transition.]

so much for assuming that they would be considerate enough to provide us with hdwe that was at least as capable as the old hdwe they provided to us in the past.

they could have at least clarified that the old modem had router capability and the new one didn't, then i would have got a router johnny on the spot and moved on to the software changes for our network printer and reconfiguring the other pc's to work with the new gateway.

hip hip hurray for qwest! not.
