No dial tone in XP Pro

Howdy

Trying to use a dlink internal PCI 56K DFM-562IS
modem with XP Pro ( Asus P4P800S with 256MB DDR400 )
but mostly the dialup software just redials after reporting
NO DIALTONE.

The line is fine as I use it all the time with another system
( using it right now ). The modem works under Millennium
( had that on the XP Pro system before XP and the modem worked OK ) on the same line but occasionally reports the same problem.

I have tried uninstall\reinstall of driver and also using a
known good modem to line cable ( swapped for the original).
No joy, same problem. Seems to be intermittent and occasionally will dial out but mostly reports NO DIAL TONE.

The line is OK and NOT intermittent as I don't have this problem with my other system ( this one ).

Millennium and other 9X versions let you change the modem options i.e. dial without checking for dial tone.
I know there is a dial tone there. How can I do the same thing in XP Pro ( is there a setting in XP to override dial tone
checking ??? ).

Any ideas welcome.

cheers

Found that Darned Check Box !!!

OK folks I fixed my little problem.

You know how it goes, find the ole hiding checkbox
in the Windows haystack.

That lil critter ain't in the same place as win 9x versions.

See if you all can find it !!!
clue modem properties somewheres.

It's there and you can make the modem dial without checking for a dial tone which it does fine. My dial tone is there and the line is fine.

Here I am online with the offending modem in XP Pro.

BUT it does have a hardware problem with it's dial tone senseing.

Maybe my initial question was plain dumb. Sometimes you need
a good shovel or maybe a spade to dig out those varmint
checkboxes !!!!

Thanks anyways

cheers

Do you have voice mail on that phone line? if so, you have to clear your messages before going online because the "stutter" dialtone that indicates messages waiting confuses the modem.

Thanx for the suggestion

Howdy glc

I have seen that voice mail stutter problem on other lines but we don't have that on our service. We have a digital
Uniden answering machine on the line ( we bought it before the Telcos here started making voice mail a standard part of the voice package. Now we can get Telco voice mail very cheap ).

The Uniden unit does have a heap of bugs ( IDIOT computer chip inside [ pretty sure it ain't Intel ] ). It drops messages, cuts people off part way through their full message record time with a robotic "Thank you for your call !!!" [ rude as ] and has a whole heap of other sly tricks.

BUT I use this system ( not using the problem modem right now - although the dial before checking for dial tone option works fine in XP ) on the same line without having problems with my dial tone ( except when my modem cable plug eases or drops out of the wall jack ).

So I don't think it's the line or attached devices or anything to do with voice mail. We do have call waiting enabled
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Other than that ( I have swapped the modem cable for a known good cable and it seems the dlink cable is OK )
I can only assume that the dlink modem has a hardware problem with it's dial tone senseing.

Thanks for the suggestion anyways.

cheers
