Can I share a modem with a Mac and PC

I'm slightly proficient with PC's but I don't know much at all about Mac's. And I know even less about networking.

Here's my problem, I built a PC a little while ago and it's been working fine. I thought I'd never use a mac in my life but then I got into film and I needed a machine that could run final cut pro so I can work with this film company nearby. I need to share a dsl modem with both of these computers and a printer too if possible.

I know what kind of hardware i put into my PC and I'm assuming it has a NIC. The motherboard is an ASUS p4c800-E deluxe and has a gigabit ethernet LAN. My new mac which i didn't build is a dual 1.8ghz powermac g5. I know it has an ethernet connection as well so I'm assuming that is an NIC. The only reason I'm confused is because i read the article on this site about networks written in 2001 and it said i needed a NIC for both computers, I'm assuming they've become standard equipment since and I have one on both my computers.

So here's my question, or questions i should say. I need to know if any compatibility issues will pop up if i put a mac and a pc on a network, or if it is even possible. I don't really want to share files anyway just the modem and printer. How do I go about setting up the network, what equipment will I need and how do i install it. How do i setup the computers to share the internet and the printer and anything else you guys think I should know, or would be helpful.

Thanks a lot, you guys helped me out when i built the PC and i know you know your stuff.

just need to put a router on the modem and connect the two computers to the router and make the necessary setting.

both computers will use the standard tcp/ip protocol and there will be no problems.
