a comptuter in my office logs on as 'this computer' instead of to our network. i want to be able to access a folder from another computer on the network from this computer. im sure i could do this if i were to change the bottom box on the logon screen to the name of our network instead of 'this computer', but when i do that the folder i want to share is not there and all the desktop settings/icons/etc are diff, not the way the user has it set up for himself. how can i change it so he will log onto the network but keep all his settings?

Regardless of the individual computer name, all machines on a network need the same Work Group name. Change it to match the others by right clicking My Computer/properties/computer name tab/change. Each computer on the network needs a different name but the same Work Group. You'll need to enable file sharing on the files you want to access also.
