password protect

this is something that has been bugging me for a long time now and i was wondering if there is anyway to set up a password to protect my files on my harddrive from people on my network. im using win xp home. i want to be able to get to my files from my laptop but i want to keep my brother whos on my network out.

If you are using NTFS file system then I think you can right clicking the folder where your files are and place a tick in the do not share this folder.

Then he couldn't get the files from his laptop. You can PW protect files in XP, not sure how though. I was just looking and you can set the folder as "private" maybe if you have the same user account on both your desktop and laptop you can access it? I am unsure on this.

in order for the folders to be private and be able to get to them from my laptop i would need to set up permissions which is only posible in xp pro so thats not a posibility.

NTFS, no matter what the OS (NT4, 2K, XP Home & Pro), has the ability to set permissions. What OS's are on your network and the computers you will be using? Do you ever use his computer? All this depends on how you will set the permissions but most likely you will just put your User Name in the permissions. If your User Name is the same on all computers it may complicate things, but hey, that's what we are here for. Report back.

im using xp home. and as for the permissions if there is a way to set them up in home then i have not found it yet and ive been looking for a while.

you must be useing the ntfs for it to work.

Grrr ... here:

Goto into windows explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View Tab > Scroll to Bottom and uncheck "Use Simple File Sharing"

Right clicking on that option for help specifies that without it checked then you can set individual permissions instead of general shares.

ok thats got to be an option in xp pro only because it ain't there in xp home nor is there anything close to that there.

NOTE: The Simple File Sharing interface cannot be disabled in Windows XP Home Edition.
