modem not functional

i have a computer with a non-funtioning modem that i need to function.

Windows [2000] says it is an error code 10, device failed to start.

When i try to add new modem, i get a message asking for a lmdmnt.sys file in a ~wzs096a.tmp folder. When i looked in the folder there was no file. When I searched the computer that file was in the drivers folder. So, I tried to use it and it would work but to finish i would have to restart the omputer. After restarting it wouldn't recognize it anymore and would ask for it again.

Also, i don't know if this is relevant or not but, i get a message saying there is no digital siganture.

It's an Agere Win Modem.

The missing file is: lmdmnt.sys

Thanks if you can help.

Agere/Lucent winmodems don't use the add modem/new hardware wizard - the driver has a Setup routine.

Before installing it, clean out the temp folders.
