I was an airdale. The Navy has a lot of airplanes too. Sub sailors are bubbleheads and surface sailors are blackshoes. 3 types of squids.
Flyboy? We called them zoomies. I've heard Marines called grunts too, this refers to anyone who lives in trenches I guess. Gotta respect them all, it can be a thankless job but somebody has to do it or life as we know it won't continue. avx - 4 years in the Marines (or any other branch of the military) are going to teach you very valuable lessons about life, and I mean this in a very positive light. |

avx, don't listen to anyone that condems you. marines are enlisted all the time, not just in peace time. regardless of whether a war is necessary or not, the military is a great establishment in this country. this is a big step you're pondering, and i wish you the best of luck.

cypher - LoL, I know what you mean. I have been told 1000 times over "They can promise you the world, and they will deliver jack S*#&!". And I believe them, I am fortunate enough to be able to speak with a few marine veterans, and they have told me a lot! Like dont shave your head before bootcamp, that just pisses em(DI's) off more, and me and my buddy chris actually were planing on shaving our heads the night before we left for boot..hehe, push ups and yelling at us avoided. Im only joining the marines for 2 reasons: payback, and college. And I have been guaranteed in paper that I will get both of those
![]() Once again thanks for all the support guys, really means a lot.

Wish you could have got a shorter time frame. Would hate to see anyone trapped into something they didn't like for any longer than they had to be there. Been awhile since I got out of the Nav. They had varying lengths of time you could get. If you got college and whatever else out of them you probably didn't have a choice about the length of service. I'll give ya the first 3 rules I learned about the military, even before I got to boot-1) Look out for #1. 2) Cover your ass. 3) **** rolls downhill. Pretty much applies to civilian life as well. I can't say I enjoyed my stay with Uncle Sam 100%(was AWOL for 26 days), but it definitely added to my education in the game of life. Take whatever schooling they offer or anything else they offer too. Suck it up and tough out boot and it will be all downhill from there. Good Luck!!!!

I couldn't resist - I just got this in my e-mail.
--------------------------------------------------------- Military Rules for the Non-Military Personnel Dear Civilians: We know that the current state of affairs in our great nation have many civilians up in arms and excited to join the military. For those of you who can't join, you can still lend a hand. Here are a few of the areas we would like your assistance: 1) The next time you see an adult talking (or wearing a hat) during the playing of the National Anthem ... kick their ass. 2) When you witness firsthand someone burning the American Flag in protest.... kick their ass. 3) Regardless of the rank they held while they served, pay the highest amount of respect to all veterans. If you see anyone doing otherwise, quietly pull them aside and explain how these Veterans fought for the very freedom they bask in every second. Enlighten them on the many sacrifices these Veterans made to make this Nation great. Then hold them down while a Disabled Veteran kicks their ass. 4) (GUYS) If you were never in the military, DO NOT pretend that you were. Wearing battle dress uniforms (BDU's), telling others that you used to be "Special Forces," and collecting GI Joe memorabilia, might have been okay if you were still seven. Now, it will only make you look stupid and get your ass kicked. 5) Next time you come across an Air Force member, do not ask them, "Do you fly a jet?" Not everyone in the Air Force is a pilot. Such ignorance deserves an ass kicking (children are exempt). 6) If you witness someone calling the U.S. Coast Guard non military, inform them of their mistake...and kick their ass. 7) Roseanne Barr's singing of the National Anthem is not a blooper...it was a disgrace and disrespectful. Laugh, and sooner or later your ass will be kicked. 8) Next time Old Glory (U.S. flag) prances by during a parade, get on your damn feet and pay homage to her by placing your hand over your heart. Quietly thank the military member or veteran lucky enough to be carrying her...of course, failure to do either of those could earn you a severe ass kicking. 9) What Jane Fonda did during the Vietnam War makes her the enemy. The proper word to describe her is "traitor." Just mention her nomination for "Woman of the Year" and get your ass kicked. 10) Don't try to discuss politics with a military member or a veteran. We are Americans and we all bleed the same regardless of our party affiliation. Our Chain of Command, is to include our Commander In Chief. The President (for those who didn't know) is our CIC regardless of political party. We have no inside track on what happens inside those big important buildings where all those representatives" meet. All we know is that when those civilian representatives screw up the situation, they call upon the military to go straighten it out. The military member might direct you to Oliver North. (I can see him kicking your ass already.) 11) "Your mama wears combat boots" never made sense to me ... stop saying it! If she did, she would most likely be a vet and probably kick your ass! 12) Bin Laden and the Taliban are not communists, so stop saying "Let's go kill those Commie's!!!" And stop asking us where he is!!!! Crystal balls are not standard issue in the military. That reminds me ... if you see anyone calling those damn psychic phone numbers; let me know, so I can go kick their ass. 13) Flyboy (Air Force), Jar Head (Marines), Grunt (Army), Squid (Navy) etc, are terms of endearment we use describing each other. Unless you are a service member or vet, you have not earned the right to use them. Could get your ass kicked. 14) Last but not least, whether or not you become a member of the military, support our troops and their families. Every Thanksgiving and religious holiday that you enjoy with family and friends please remember that there are, literally, thousands of sailors and troops far from home wishing they could be with their families. Thank God for our military and the sacrifices they make every day. Without them, our country would get its ass kicked. "It is the soldier, not the reporter who has given us the freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us the freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who gives us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag." ~Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, Sergeant, USMC |

The only reason people don't think the Coast Guard is military is because they are under the Dept. of Transportation instead of Defense.

Since the terrorist threats the Coast Guard has now been moved under the jurisdiction of the Department of Home land Defense, which I *believe* is associatied with the United States Treasury

Having just moved into his new office, a pompous, new colonel was sitting at his desk when an airman knocked on the door.
Conscious of his new position, the colonel quickly picked up the phone, told the airman to enter, then said into the phone, "Yes General, I'll be seeing him this afternoon and I'll pass along your message. In the meantime, thank you for your good wishes, sir. Feeling as though he had sufficiently impressed the young enlisted man, he asked, "What do you want?" "Nothing important, sir," the airman replied, "I'm just here to hook up your telephone." |

Hey avx! I'm proud of you to choose what you want to do & follow through with it! The next time those goofballs say this war is not necessary, ask them if they thought the WTC & Pentagon was not necessary! Also ask if they lost someone there, if they didn't then ask them what if they did? Some people are so stupid to believe that everything is supposed to be okay & we will be at peace & have a wondeful world together. They need to read the bible & see what has happened over our time on this world. It also says that when peace comes to this world watch out! Good luck in the jarhead group & watch your back!
BTW I thought we were not supposed to use words on this forum such as "ass"? I do believe I got censored for a joke using a bad word on her at one time! |

Hey avx! One more thing, someone sent this to me the other day & I thought this would fit your situation well! May God bless & keep you safe!
Got Your Back I am a small and precious child, my dads been sent to fight... The only place I'll see his face, is in my dreams at night. He will be gone too many days for my young mind to keep track. I may be sad, but I am proud. My daddy's got your back... I am a caring mother. My son has gone to war... My mind is filled with worries that I have never known before. Everyday I try to keep my thoughts from turning black. I may be scared, but I am proud. My son has got your back... I am a strong and loving wife, with a husband who had to go. There are times I'm terrified in a way most never know. I bite my lip, and force a smile as I watch my husband pack... My heart may break, but I am proud. My husbands got your back... I am a soldier... Serving Proudly, standing tall. I fight for freedom, yours and mine by answering this call. I do my job while knowing, the thanks it sometimes lacks. Say a prayer that I'll come home. It's me who's got your back. (author unknown) |

USMC:1969-1973.
Then, in a fit of insanity, joined the USN the day I got my Marine discharge.(Biggest mistake I ever made) Due to family problems, I called it quits in 1978. Want primarily an education, benefits, bigger re-enlistment bonus, etc?-join the USAF or the USN. If you want to fight, with some education & benefits-put your feet on those yellow footprints. Just remember-you'll be a Marine till the day you die. I know. If you want to talk to those who've done it-check out leatherneck.com. Whatever choice you make, good luck to you, & stay safe. It always cracks me up when these people do not agree with someone entering the military or calling this a 'useless war'. Maybe they have already forgotten the senseless terrorist attacks since 1983 on US soldiers and our country. Maybe they forgotten that a soldier, not a politician is the reason they speak English and not German or Japanese right now... it amazes me they also forget that a soldier is what gave them their freedoms in the first place - work where you want, do what you want, all thanks to a soldier. How quick we forget...
