As you can see the war led to lots and lots of coverage-so why can't everybody say it correctly?

PRONOUNCE IT CORRECTLY-PLEASE

IRAQ-is E-RUCK
not I-RACK or E-RACQI,

then there is BASRA
not BASS-RAH (the first part sounds like the name of that fish),
or BASS-RE, or BUS-RAH
Its BUS-RA

Its not nice to call people/things/places the way its not supposed to sound. SO LEARN!!What if someone calls you/your country and anything associated with incorrectly-it is unpleasant. Example:

AMERICA-
E-MERY-KAH, or E-MARRY-KA, and so fouth.

Evan names-such as JHON
J-YAWN, or JEAN, or so fourth.

Here we can see that there is a misundurstanding-If corected-then still pronounce the incorrect word the person who feels uneasy will conclude that this person is arrogant, and unwilling to listen-resulting in the degrade of respect.
A great way to do this is by listening to other tv stations that are not based in the same country-try finding the sources from that country.

I think the "mispronounciations" you are referring to, are many times due to the differences in languages. You say Iraq is pronounced E-RUCK? I've never heard it pronounced with a U sound anywhere. I've always heard it as E-ROCK or I-RACK. Iraqis aren't any better at pronouncing our people or places though either. I've heard them call America A-MARE-E-KAH and President Bush was pronounced BOOSH.

It's all a mater of languages.

In spanish Iraq is written Irak and pronounced E-rak. The a sounds like in cat.

Basra is written Basora, and pronounced Ba-SO-ra. The a is again pronounced like in cat and the o like in bolt.

I-rak (I as "In", Rak as "Rack of ribs")

Quite where the 'I' (as in 'I went to work') came from I cannot imagine.

If you want to know how to pronounce something in *English*, a good definitive reference is always the BBC. I believe that they have a whole unit dedicated to getting the pronunciation correct for their presenters. Compare for the lack of support that CNN seems to give its presenters and the resulting hash you get.

However, if you are speaking in a different language, then the pronunciation will be different of course.

It is a Maori name, and I have been told that the 'Wha' is pronounced 'Fu'. Say it out loud.

People's accents usaully vary, thus the pronunciation of places/things/people/ideas are usaully mispronounced. Although, I usaully go the extra mile to learn the pronunciations as to not offend anyone

You're talking about two different words Braveheart. Aluminium is the chiefly British spelling and is pronounced as it's spelled, whereas aluminum is the more widely accepted spelling and also is pronounced as it's spelled.

i don't think it's in anyway meant as to be said in a disrespectful manner. there are just different sounds in each language. even broken down to dialects in different parts of the united states, some words are pronounced differently.

Officially oil (oyl) is the correct pronunciation. However in much of Bush's Texas you'll hear "awll", or even at times the dual-syllabic "awull".

Quite frankly if you want me to pronounce it Eruck, then spell it, Eruck. If you spell it Iraq that is exactlly how I will pronounce it.

How you can get a hard "E" sound from I and the "uh" sound from a, is beyond me. If the pronunciation is wrong don't blame the people that pronounce it according to the spelling, blame the idiot that used the wrong sounds in the first place.

Quite obviously the character that made the translation from Arabic to English didn't know how to bloody well spell, now we all have to wear the dunce cap for that idiots mistake.

Now just imagine the problem we would have if he had spelled it, Iraqu. We would all be pronouncing it I-ra-cue.

If you don't like the way we pronounce it then go to whomever is responsible for setting the correct spelling of English words and get them to change it. Because from now and for ever more, 90% or more of the English world will pronounce it I-rak.
