I saw a clip on the news of a statue of Saddam being toppled and Iraqis dancing on it and trampling it. It shows that they feel confident about the troops kicking out Saddam for good.

But wait, we could be wrong, the Iraqis probably really hate us, and the world thinks we are wrong! and what we are doing is bad and Bush is the next Hitler, and our soldiers are suffering!

Americans live so much of their lives through their televisions that most Americans here act as if they've just fought and won the war themselves.

They loved the part where a marine draped our besotted flag over the head of Saddam's statue. I cringed. I don't have television (can't stand the lies), so what I learn is what I overhear at work, or from my family, or what I see on the occasional barroom television that isn't tuned to ESPN.

I was dismayed, because I thought it was time that I admitted I was wrong about Iraq. I contended that most Iraqi's had no desire to be "liberated" and knew damn good and well that the control of their country had just been seized by a force that was not very sympathetic to their needs, and much more sympathetic to the needs of Israel...a force that is, in fact, practically a servant boy to the latter.

So I'm listening to my coworkers crow about the sight of the statue falling down, I cruise the net and sure as hell, I see the images. But I still say to myself...something about that just doesn't seem right.

And sure as hell I was right.

Baghdad is a city that is almost the same size as London or Los Angeles.

Look at that picture up there. There aren't 200 people in that square, and a sizable number of them are US troops.

But virtually nobody in America knows that...and if the networks have their way, they never will.

So now the Bush supporters gloat. "Aren't you glad we freed Iraq?" they say, snidely.

"We'll see," I say. It's all that I can say. "We'll see."


How did Nicaragua fair when our "freedom fighters" saved it from the mildly socialist Sandanistas? Not well. In fact, the country was virtually destroyed. The USA was convicted in an international court of law for using excessive force, and ordered to pay Nicaragua nine billion dollars. We never paid, and instead we only stepped up our attacks.

The man that the Bushists want to replace Saddam, a man by the name of Chalabis, was convicted in Jordan of embezzling $300 million.

How would you feel if the country that had just "liberated" you was going to appoint a convicted embezzler to run your nation for you?

All of that means nothing, though, to the gloating Americans.

And yet, still they wonder, "Why does the world hate us?"

That flag has been raised at every victory the US has every obtained...and it will raise at every victory we earn, because we did earn, we fought, and died to earn the victory(notice how I say "we"..cause the American people are "United", thats one of the reasons we put it in our name)...And another thing...for someone who cant stand lies and doesnt watch TV, you sure think you know a lot. If you cringe when you see the american flag...I would say you got some problems, why would you cringe at something that represetns such power, such prosperity, such freedom, such happiness and unity...why would you cringe at that..??

You must seriously be whatching another channel or a picture on the net, or an overheard guesstimate, or whatever you want to call it...cause I saw S**TLOAD of people out there...and plus...some marines didnt even know what the hell was going on in Baghdad, how was ever single Iraq supposed to know...do you know what is going on right now a mile away from your house...since you dont even watch TV, I am guessign ...No...want another reason...SURE...Some Iraqis still know its a WARZONE, they are using that old common sense thing...they dont know if Saddam is gonna use some crazy last minute tactic and bomb the center to get the marines, so they damn sure aint gonna go outside and risk being killed...

Yes we are! And not everyonie is a bush supporter, they can be happy we freed Iraq cause they want the soldiers to come home ASAP, some can just be humanitarian who are appauled to see what there living conditions are and are happy to know that we can now bring aid into the almost all cities.

Chalabis, though, seems to be as power hungry as Saddam; he's been accused, by Jordan and the USA itself, of misusing his positions of leadership to swindle the people he led and to further his own rise to power. Not to mention, as someone who hasn't lived in Iraq since 1956, most of Iraq doesn't even accept him as a fellow countryman; half a century of living elsewhere means he's out of touch with the people.

We have to make sure that we're not replacing him with the next Saddam. When we recruited Saddam to help overthrow the existing government of Iraq, he had a similar background -- an expatriate who fought against his former government, one with something of a checkered past, but who promised to support US interests in Iraq.

#1. I don't believe it was advertised to the City of Baghdad that there would be a gathering to take down the statue.

#2 Many Baghdad citizens were still afraid that Saddam or his regime were not completely gone. Many were still afraid to come into the streets.

#3. Only after the Iraqis attempts to destroy the statue were not working, did the military help them out with heavy equipment.

I'm with you Carl, I believe it was spontaneous and triumphant. It's not so had to believe, ya know. THOSE people were geniunely happy - although there are others who aren't so happy out there as well.

US forces stood by as Baghdad's National Library and Archives were burnt to the ground by arsonists. The library housed a priceless collection of Ottoman historical documents, including the old royal archives of Iraq, But no matter, the US war effort is going so well that the former site of the library will soon provide a nice location for a new Wal*Mart. Then the Iraqis will have some real culture.

You said it Jack.... Iraqi arsonists burnt it down after Iraqis looted it. I guess those wonderful people can get their WMD hidden, but leave their "precious national treasures" out where they knew for months they were going to be bombed. One can hardly blame the U.S. soldiers for something the Iraq people did, and that the Saddam regime allowed to happen. They had plenty of time to bunker these "treasures", but chose not.

Funny how there were plenty of US soldiers to guard the oil ministry but the museum, which a delegation of esteemed scholars begged the US to protect in case of war, was left to be looted.

Too bad the Bush family wasn't in the archeology business-- then they'd have known what was truly valuable in Iraq.

I agree! We should have guarded the museum whether the Iraqi people tasted freedom or not.
The artifacts could have sold to the highest bidder to help with reconstruction.

I completely disagree Jackblack! Oil is the most valuable treasure of the Iraqi people! What was truly valuable was protected. Oil is both the present and the future of that land, not a bunch of artifacts.

Later reports have the damage not nearly as bad as originally thought, and many objects are turning up and being returned. It was also learned that many of the TRUE valuables were taken and hidden away prior to the war.

Ummmm, Humanity doesn't include giving billions to the country Isreal, which is destroying the Palastinian people's lives, Isrealviolating U.N. Regulation by remaining in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, now does it? Or is Palestine, with little or no remnants of a Gov't left still a terrorist state?

The Arabs in Palestine are not a terrorist people. There are terrorist elements, far too many elements, that operate much too freely there. They must be destroyed as all terrorists must be. The people there deserve a decent democratic republic, i.e. freedom, as well, free from all true terrorists, just as we in America do.
