If this is a generic computer with XP and you have a XP CD that's not a "recovery disk" the easiest way is do a Windows repair reinstall.

Repair Reinstallation of Windows XP (using XP CD)

If this is not the case, please post what you do have. There is also a possibility that your hard drive is failing.

You can do a "slipstream" to make a XP reinstall CD with the service packs.

http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase...slipstream.asp

That will bring it up to SP2. If you need SP3, slipstream again:

If it doesn't see the hard drive, one of 2 possibilities.

1. The drive has failed.
2. It's a SATA drive and you need to press F6 to install the SATA driver from a floppy disk.

There really isn't a way to create a XP reinstall CD from XP that is installed on your laptop. It will not successfully boot due to the different hardware.

Nothing you download can make a hard drive fail. It's a mechanical device. If it's only 6 months old, get a warranty replacement.
