windos\inf\biosinfo.inf missing

I have a problem. Daughter was using laptop.. no idea what happened...

I go to boot up and get the following, \windows\inf\biosinfo.inf is missing or corrupt.

Computer will not boot from xp cd, will not boot from anything in any mode.. tried all the safe modes, and last known configuration etc.. tried all on xp.... running xp pro.... worked great for several years... she said she clicked some update link..

So now what? any suggestions? cannot wipe HD and start over, cause no commands are allowed... I am quite frustrated.. please assist!!!

If you can't get it to boot with an XP CD, there's nothing you can do.

I don't see how it will help, because the machine will not boot to either the hard drive or a CD. There is no way to repair this if the machine will not boot to SOMETHING.
