I have a new desktop computer (six months old) I have 2 older home built computers that connect to the internet and are working good!
The new one is a HP Compaq Presario desk top Model SR5450F with Vista installed! I got so mad at Vista that I completely wiped out the hard drive and installed Win. XP Professional on the hard drive from a VALID Microsoft Windows XP CD! Now I have a good working Win XP system with one exception, I can't connect to the Internet! I do not have any of the drivers. The system has a 1394 NIC card but no drivers. HP has told me I violated their warranty and they won't help me! HP's website has drivers but my hardware uses Vista drivers and they won't install, also HP's drivers for Win XP won't install either! Where can I get generic drivers that this HP system will allow me to install? I have been downloading drivers on my older systems, putting them on DVD's and taking these DVD'S to the HP system but the Presaro won't let them install! How can I get this new system working??? |

XP is not compatible with that computer. There are no XP drivers available. You will have to put Vista back on it. You should not have wiped Vista out before checking for XP support.

Your response sounds correct! I will have no problem putting Vista back!
BUT I would like to put Win XP on as a second operating system! I have been told I can't put 2 Microsoft operating systems on the same computer! Will Partition Magic with Boot Magic work on Vistai. If it will, This brings up 2 questions! 1. I have Partition Magic Version 7! Will it work? 2. Will PM Version 7 install on a Vista system and if not what version of PM will I have to get? |

PM7 is too old, not compatible - and not needed.

In using (http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_v...step_guide.htm)
It worked great until I got the following error! IMPORTANT NOTE – after the initial file copy, Windows XP reboots and loads up the GUI-based component of the install. You may get the following error: “A disk read error occurred – press Ctrl-Alt-Del to continue”. This is caused by a corrupt bootloader – click here to see how to fix this problem. Pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del to continue does not work. I tried it over and over with the same results! and (click here to see how to fix this problem) does not work either! How can I get past a corrupt bootloader? If I cant fix the corrupt bootloader I will have to Reinstall Vista again? |

My computer is an HP Compaq Presario desktop PC. It is still under warranty (for 6 more months). Do you think HP will let me downgrade my system from Vista to Win XP Pro? If not I am going to Junk the system.
On my old XP computer I have lots of programs and games that I have been accumulating for the last 7 years that work on XP and more then half of them won't work on Vista! |

How are you going to downgrade it when you can't get drivers?
Use the restore kit and put Vista back on it as delivered, then try to sell it. Then build a new XP system yourself or order a Dell from the small business site that has the XP downgrade available. |

Have you tried running the programs in question in compatibility mode for Windows XP?
http://lifehacker.com/software/vista...ode-251492.php Since switching to Vista, I've encountered one problem with older software not running as it should. This fixed the problem. You should also make sure you have the latest version of those programs, assuming there are updates available.

Considering brand new ones are available for $368 shipped, not much. Maybe $200 being that it's used.
