Western Digital 40gb External Drive Data Retrieval

Hello,

I wanted to write and pick your brain to see what you thought about retrieving data from a Western Digigtal 40gb hard drive that won't work. It sounds like it spins for 2 seconds and then it stops. I have a lot data on here and I have tried many things such as freezing it and using didfferent connecting wires too but I haven't been successful. What could I do to retrieve the data from it?

Please let me know when you have the chance.
Thanks
Joe

Sounds like you've tried all the common methods. About all that's left is sending it out to a data recovery company and spending a BUNCH of $$. One other method that you might consider is finding an exact duplicate, working drive and swapping the circuit boards. If the spinning stopping is a control problem the board swap may allow access. If, on the other hand, the problem is a failing/failed bearing, swapping boards won't do anything for you.
