Drive assignation
In my computer, I have connected:
A. one Seagate SATA drive running as the booting disk, appearing as C:, B. one Seagate SATA drive running as a data disk, appearing as D:. C. one Seagate SATA drive to be used for photo storage, which appears as I:. !!!!! two SATA DVD burners, which appear as F: and G:. If I substitute a WD SATA drive for the third (storage) drive, it appears as G:.`` Why? is there something in the settings in a drive which could account for this? What can I do to make the three drives appear as C:, D:, and E: and the two burners as F: and G: My ASUS P5K-E motherboard layout shows six SATA connectors, Laid out as follows: SATA1 Sata3 Master Slave SATA2 Sata4 Master Slave SATA5 Sata6 Master Master |

You can change the letter of any drive except the active OS drive (C) with Disk Management. To get them the way you want, you may have to change each one twice - first to open up the letter you want to use for another drive, then to your final choice.
Right click My Computer, Manage. Disk Management. |

Thank you. I know about disk management, but I'm hoping to be able to do it otherwise.
C: and D: appear OK. If the third drive is a Seagate SATA, it appears as I:., not C: If the third drive is a Western Digital SATA, it appears as G:, not C: Why? is there something in the settings in a drive which could account for this? |

You have to use Disk Management. The port it's on makes no difference and there is nothing in a drive that would matter.
I'm guessing you have at least 2 removable drives and/or card readers that's taken E and H. |

You were right about having removable drives., and I thank you.
I removed all hard drives and removable storage, then installed one hard driive after another, then the two CD burners, one after another, turning the computer off and re-starting each time. It was time consuming, but now the hard drives appear as C:, D:, and E:. The two DVD burners appear as F: and G:. Everything is exactly as desired, without using Disk Management. |

Why did you do this the hard way? Just because you could?

Hey: Had the same thing goin on! Tried what glc said to do and got all my drives inline.... NEAT STUFF. There was just one hitch, when setting up my 2nd hard drive it asked to shut down before the letter would take hold after that I went back and all the right letters were there to put in to there right places ..... and it only took about 2 min. and it was fun............
