Router questions

Looking to buy a new router after my belkin died unexpectedly.

I see wireless G, wireless N, extreme this and that, dual band frequencies, etc, and am not sure if the extra cost is worth it. I would like a very stable wireless connection but don't want to spend $200 on a router just to get a *bit* more speed/stability vs your standard $60 wireless G d-link or whatever.

For example, would this router be worth the price, and do I need a special network adapter to use with it?

Fair enough, I assume that means wireless N etc isn't worth the extra price.

Thanks!

Not unless you are prepared to buy N adapters of the same brand for all the computers.

:/

Well yeah I would need an adapter (it's only for my laptop) to make wireless N work, but is the extra stability and speed worth the price? Is it just $100 extra bumping your connection from an 8/10 to an 8.1/10, or is it significant?

If you transfer a lot of files wirelessly, maybe. But for the vast majority of the time, its not worth it. That Linksys is a great router and you can even load new firmware onto it to tweak a lot of features if you ever need extra functionality.

If it's a laptop, and I needed to move a bunch of files between it and a desktop, I'd use an Ethernet cable anyway. N will be worth it eventually - but for now it's still not a fully ratified standard.

ordered the linksys, it's on its way.

How do you transfer files via just a cable, glc? Not by standard file sharing is it?

Let me clarify - I'd plug the laptop into the router with a cable and use standard Windows filesharing.
