I have several WRT54GUSB ver.4 adapters for my wireless network. Just recently I noticed that when I start up my computers that the system just keeps rebooting and never starts until I remove the USB adapter. Then sometimes I am able to connect the adapter and use my network. However, sometimes it just starts the computer restarting in the same way as before. I contacted Linksys and they told me my product is out of warranty, so they wont help me.
I reformatted and reloaded my software, (Windows XP Pro SP1) and then reloaded the Linksys software. As long as I don't turn off or reboot my computer I can get on the network. If I load my motherboard software to get my sound I have to start all over again. I don't know who to turn to to resolve this problem! I certainly don't want to purchase anymore hardware from Linksys. Can anyone help me with this problem? I would be ever grateful! Last edited by glc; 03-27-2009 at 02:35 PM. 1. Why are you only installing SP1?
2. Sometimes that's just the nature of USB. I do not recommend USB wireless adapters for desktop computers at ALL, regardless of brand. Get some PCI cards and install them internally. |

I'm using SP1 because I have the disk for it and loading any more is a waste of time because I have to keep reloading the software.
The way my home is set up, I would have to run cables all around the outside of the house and up the sides to reach the upper floor. This system worked fine when I first installed it, until the warranty ran out. Also, It was the setup Embarq gave me when I went DSL. |

Perhaps you misunderstood me - I meant that you should replace those USB adapters with internal PCI wireless adapters.
There is a technical reason for SP2 or SP3 with wireless - you would be able to use Windows to configure the wireless instead of having to load the Linksys (or any other brand) configuration utility - all you need is the basic adapter drivers. The builtin Windows configuration utility in SP1 is terrible and does not support WPA encryption. SP2 was a major improvement. |

Oh! OK, which PCI adapter would you recommend? I will try installing SP2 and is there any advantage to SP3 I need to know about?

Well, SP3 has a lot more patches and security enhancements - I'd install it when you get things sorted.
To be honest, I like the Linksys PCI adapters, but I can understand your reluctance to get them. What brand router are you using? If you want to try something dirt cheap, this looks pretty decent: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833180030 |
