Create Compaq restore disks
Hi.. wasn't sure which forum to post this to..
Bought a Compaq CQ2009F computer, one of those new, small computers with the Intel Atom chip. Works well, but comes with NO CDs.. XP is pre-installed. According to an HP article http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...cname=bph08097 , I should be able to create restore disks that contain the OS, drivers, etc. But no folders this article mentions are in the "All Programs" directory of the computer. The site mentioned in the book that came with the computer suggests you can't get any disks with the OS, and just individual files with the drivers, etc. Contact with the HP support group (who obviousl;y do not have great command of English) may be promising (after 5 emails).. have to wait and see.. the last response was kind of fuzzy. This computer lets you restore the full original HD files via pressing [F10] on bootup, but if the HD dies, that's no good. There's a D: partition that contains only the files (in a cryptic directory) for restoring the HD. Hard to access what's in it without a lot of caution warnings. Was thinking of copying this to a CD, but not sure it would be of any use if the HD crashes. Any way to check to see if any other PCMech residents own the CQ2009F or similar Compaq/HP and resolved this problem. Have only had the computer 2 days. Thanks for any suggestions, cuzzzzz |

Have you tried the command prompt method?
You can order a set. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...roduct=3887062 |

glc.. that's part of the link I mentioned in my post. If you look at the XP file, it says 0 bytes, while all the driver files are in the MB range. There should be, according to the book that came with the computer, a disk that has all the files (OS, drivers) rather than having to order all separately.
Thanks for checking into this, but I've been at that site and not sure it's what I need. cuzzzzz |

It's not a 0 byte disk, the link takes you to an order page for a restore kit. That's common with HP. If you have the restore kit, you don't need the separate drivers. The drivers are for the convenience of people who want to reload with a generic OS CD.

Thanks glc.. clears some things up. btw, yes, I did try the command prompt method.. didn't behave anything like the article said, just as the folders and files it mentioned for creating recovery disks via "all programs" were not present on my machine.
Funny.. While writing this, just got call from HP (probably India) re my email requests for recovery CDs. HP seems to have customer-oriented service so far. Thanks again cuzzzzz |
