verizon fios connection speed question

M computer that is hooked up directly to my verizon fios router, gets great download speed results (20 mb down /5mb up) This is pretty consistent. When I hook up an ethernet cord to my other computers in the house, or even try going wireless, I only get 10mb down...I still get the 5mb up.

My speeds are advertised for 20down/5up for verizon fios. Why would I be getting only half the download speed with my other computers...even when they are wired with ethernet? I even tried 2 different ethernet cords and both give me only half the speed (10mb down)

thanks for the help guys.

What brand and model router to do you have? Have you tried another ethernet cable? And what is the what is the speed the wireless card negotiates with the router (e.g. 11Mb for 'b', 54Mb for 'g', etc...)

HTH

it sounds like a ethernet setting problem (the give-a-way is the 10mbps).

Check the settings on the router and make sure that it is set for 100mbps not auto-detect.

What are the advertised speeds on all your network adapters? 10, 10/100, or 10/100/1000? I am assuming the router's switch ports are 10/100? If so, and all the adapters are either 10/100 or 10/100/1000, set all the adapters to 100 full duplex.

the settings for my wireless adaptor don't have any options for setting the duplex.

I am only talking about your WIRED connections! You take whatever you can get with wireless.

alright well my speed/duplex settings were set at "autonegotiate" and I tried 'force 100 full duplex' and "autonegotiate for 100FD" Both these alternate settings gave me speeds around 2mb/sec. This is really weird. Could it have anything to do with the actual ethernet wiring? I tried 2 different varieties.

and how would i figure out what my router's switch ports are?

router info:

Platform: Westell UltraLine Series3
Model Number: A90-9100EM15-10

Those are 10/100 ports.

Are you plugging ALL the computers DIRECTLY into the router?

my main computer that has the router sitting next to it, and my upstairs computer are both physically connected to the verizon fios router. Only my laptop is wireless right now.

So, the main computer gives you 20/5 and the upstairs computer gives you 10/5? Give me the specs of the upstairs computer, please.

winXP Pro Service pack 3
AMD athlon XP 2700+
1.5gb RAM
Abit NF7 Mobo
Radeon 9600 serious GPU
10/100 NIC

I use speedtest.net to test my connection. It consistent gets around 10-12mbps up, whereas the computer sitting next to the router constantly gets 20mbps.
