Software modems

Hi friends,

Just wanted to know a little more about software modems.

What actually do HSFMODEM and HCFMODEM stand for?

Do HSFModem, HCFModem, Controllerless modem, Software Modem, WinModem all mean the same.

If yes, then why so many names?

Thanks a lot

Winmodem is actually a US Robotics trademark for their software modems. I believe HCF and HSF are mainly used by Conexant - the HCF is partially hardware controlled but the HSF is full software. Bottom line - all these modems depend on the system CPU and a software driver to function where a true hardware modem does it all with its own chips.
