modem "no boots"

Hi Guys, I just got done upgrading my wife's computer. Took out an ECS P6BAT+ mobo with a 500 Celeron and upgraded to an ECS K7S5A mobo with a 1 gig Duron. My problem is that the modem that worked in the old computer will not let the new one boot. When I take it out it boots just fine. I tried it on a spare computer I have and it's OK there. Using an old 33 modem til I figure what's going on. It is an ESS 56k, V92 modem. I tried all 5 PCI slots and the onboard modem is disabled. Any ideas why the puter won't boot with this modem? Un-install the old modem driver.

Install new modem driver BEFORE you put in modem. Unplug

Install new modem, on an unshared PCI slot, and power up.

O Beachian, I installed the modem on a brand new board. Never had a driver installed as it refused to boot with the modem installed in any of the PCI slots. I just tried to install the driver first but still won't boot with the modem card installed in any PCI slots.

Does the new motherboard have one of those AMR type modems on it? (they look like a really tiny, tiny, little PCI slot. If there is you may need to disable it in the bios. Are you able to at least post when the modem is in one of the slots? If you can then go into the bios and try enabling the 'reset device configuration' or something like that. If you cant even post when the modem is in one of the PCI slots, but the same modem works fine in other machines, that kind of sucks! I cant really think of much of anything you could really do to get it to work, aside from looking over your motherboard and double checking ALL of the jumper settings, also make sure that you dont have a bunch of other things installed on the computer when your trying to get the modem to work.

Do other cards (Sound card) work in the PCI slots?

Is that 33.6 modem ISA or PCI?

Do you have an available ISA slot?
If so I would recommend getting a 56K "hard" ISA modem. I have a Zoom/Hayes #2919 that works great.

If not, then get a USR #2977 "hard" PCI modem.

What else is hooked up to the computer? What OS are you running?

ECS motherboards and ESS modems aren't exactly on the "short list" of quality components - looks like the 2 just don't like each other and one of the 2 is going to have to go.

The 33 modem is a PCI. The board doesn't have ISA's. I have the "onboard" modem disabled. There is no post. Last night I reformatted then cleard the CMOS with the jumper on the board and tried to post with the 56 modem and still nothing. Like the man said. "one of 'em will have to go". Think I'll keep the modem. Thanks for the thoughts guys. Collieman
