Modem and driver installed, but no connection.

Hi,

I’ve gotten all the parts of my Athlon machine together and am in Windows 98SE. The only thing not working is the modem. I pulled it out of an old Compaq. It’s a Rockwell 56k.

Windows recognizes the modem on startup as new hardware and searches for drivers. I let it install the drivers and I tried to get my existing MSN account set up. The modem won’t even dial a number. I get different messages depending on what I’m trying to connect to, but they all seem to be saying that the modem isn’t responding.

In specific example from the MSN dial-up window, I get: “The port was disconnected due to hardware failure.”

I’ve been all up and down the modem properties and settings in the control panel. It’s listed as my default modem, so the PC knows it’s there, it’s not working for some reason.

IMPORTANT: I conjectured that there was a possible conflict between the modem and my machine because of its Compaq origins. Maybe I even fried it somehow, but I handled all the parts with equal care. Just in case, I pulled the Supra Max 56k out of my other system and plugged it into the new one. I used the drivers on the CD I had for it. The same problems occurred.

I see. Didn't know about that. My bad. I just wasn't sure which board it should go on, so I did both.

No problem.
Sometimes it can be difficult to decide. PC Hardware and Pheripherials are very close. Anyway, just make a decision and post it once. Threads will only be moved if they're obviously in the wrong forum.
But as I said, we're gonna check them all. As you see, double posts are found immediately
