is my cd rom defective?

had problems with win-98 and end-up reformating and intalling win-me averithing whent ok can lplay music ok. but tried to install game (1st grade .....) (it was on economic cd-r) and it could not even finish installing when it had error reading , tried the same game now with a good brand cd-r (game- copy) and it installed and after 1 min playing had en error reading ,played with original cd and played good for 5 min before had error reading , installed an cd lens cleaner and after the speech on track 1 sais to go to track 4 ,when i did it the sound played distotioned and hear a noise like every time the brushes was touching the lens or something like that , could i have a defective cd player , i do not know if it was working good before we format and install win-me ,but when i open the cd plyer the 1st time it had a cd that was looking like sand paper. this computer was order by catalog and it looks like bare-bone (no brand) 450 mhz 64 mb ram 6 gig h.d.

cd-rom drives don't cost much, so if I were you, I would change it. you can get a cd-rw drive for under $50 if you look hard enough. Or you could get a dvd-rom drive for under $40. If it's still screwy just take it back for a refund.

Maybe your first-grader put something into the cd-rom slot, or perhaps your cd has some severe scratches on it.

Look for signs of peanut-butter and jelly.

I agree. Before you tear up any more software, go and get yourself an inexpensive cd-rom drive. It's not difficult to install yourself.
