fqpissed trying to reinstall everything on dell and color depth problem

I have built my own pc but working on this Dell is giving me problems. My nephew crashed it and I reformated and reinstalled windows 98SE and all seemed ok, then it of course detected the modem and said we hadn't loaded driver. Well every time I go to load the driver which is on a CD it says can't read the disk that we need to set color depth to 256 colors. I know how to do that but it won't set for 256. The only options is 2 or 16 colors. What gives with this? The drivers that come with it should load. Please help? The modem in it is an Aztech3800.

Go into the device manager (press the Windows key and Pause/Break at the same time) and then under Display See if the correct display adapter is showing or if there are two showing. If the proper one is not there you will need to load the drivers, if you have two showing remove the Default Video adapter.

I will try that, but I have one problem, the drivers are on a cd and the cd the pc won't setup the cd because it keeps telling me that the color depth needs to be 256 and there is no place to set it for 256. If I could just get the cd to set up the drivers would all install.

I kinda suspect that you have two adapters listed and once you get rid of the default you will be able to change the color depth.

You are going to need a properly installed VIDEO (not modem) driver before you will be able to get it out of the 16 color mode.

Thanks for the answers. Before I could get to work on it again, he had the internet people do it and they have a guy who was trained to work on dells. All your answers were right. Dell and others sort of have it difficult to rework so that way you have to send them back to the factory or buy a new one. All the drivers are on one disk. I am so glad Ibuilt my own and that I don't have a dell dude.
