I got da 566 Itch!

I want to put the CeleryII 566 on an Asus CUBX board, but only see that it goes to 8x multiplier. Is there a bios flash for this board?

Actually I ordered both components together from a supplier and just got a call that they won't work together. I thought I saw a post on here that they would.

There is a beta bios 1006b03 at asustek.de

I dont know if this gives you the support you need, but I understand it improves the Ultra 66 controller's performance considerably.

You might want to look at Usenet - alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.asus

It may take some digging - there are about 300 new posts there every day and your newsserver's retention span may be kinda short with this active a newsgroup.

I *do* know you can stuff a 533 Celery in there and O/C it to 800 without it even breaking a sweat.

Thanks glc.. I don't have that, but I do have a 466 to play with till they get the bios upgraded if need be. The board just looks pretty damn good to me. It's a shame if it won't go above 8.0.

Ok, I downloaded the zip file cubx1063.zip from the .de site. In it is a file "1006cu.003". I have no idea what this may upgrade, but being the initial bios file is in cubx1005.zip, it looks to be a bios upgrade flash. The file's name scares me as the 100b is called "cubx1005.awd". I wonder if I changed the name of the new one to "something.awd" if it truly is a bios upgrade.. the size of the two files is:

cubx1005.awd - 262,144 , date - 3/15/00
1006cu.003 - 262,144 , date - 5/19/00

Any thoughts?

My Abit BF6 only goes to 8.0, and I'm running a 566 Celeron II in it. Since the mulitplier is locked, the chip could careless what the multiplier is. Mine actually says 3.5, because I'm using the User Defined setting, and there is no reason to change it, so I left it. 566 is a good chip, BTW.

get a 566 and chuck it in. Although the mobo may not support the multi-plier the chip itselt seeing as it is clock locked will force the multiplier to 8.5 x then all you have to do is turn the FSB up to 100 Mhz. Im actually not to sure on the overclocking now with this method must ask around.

Im pretty sure it will still overclock like the champ it is.

Ok Padawan, what fsb speed are you running it at and what speed does it show at post? I'll no doubt give it a try like that if I can't find out any more about that beta bios flash.

In the meantime, I'm building a relatively inexpensive system for friends using an Abit VA6 board. I threw my old P3-450 on it and stoked it to 133, 4/3, default 2.0 voltage and it spun right up to 600mhz. It would never do that on my Tyan 1530S.. no doubt because I had no way to adjust the pci/memory divisor.

Um...wait a min here.....
The reason your system board may not support the Cel566 may not be multiplier related.
What may be the problem is core voltage.
The coppermines require 1.65 volts and some system boards cant set the regulators this low, check with ASUS on this before you stuff that puppy in there.
If your regulators wont set that low, the CPU might be subjected to higher then recomended voltages thus damaging the CPU. Some system boards will only go down to 1.80 volts and this is .15 volts above normal. Result would be a VERY warm running CPU. Some system board regulators wont go below 2.0 volts and this is very high for the coppermine and may *fry* it.

The Asus CUBX is certified for the Celermines. It is a FC-PGA socket board that a Socket 370 chip will also fit in. Voltage is not an issue in this particular circumstance.

How would I find out what that beta bios I (and glc) mentioned earlier is supposed to accomplish?

I've never really messed with newsgroups. I couldn't find anything in the threads on deja.com. I'm gonna try the beta flash (after saving the existing bios), and see what it does.

WJ - I saw something posted today on the asus newsgroup - it looks to me like the beta bios will allow multipliers over 8x in softset. I also got the impression that with the original bios all you need to do is use the dip switches and the locked multiplier will take care of itself.

That sounds logical. I don't mind working with the dips. In fact once I get these new Asus boards where I want them, I set the dips. The soft menu always wants to revert to default.

Yeah, can't beat good ole dip switch jumpers. I've actually never used a "jumperless" motherboard, last machine I built was a couple years back, and the board I bought for this one I explicitly got because it had all of its switches intact.

Kinda makes me think of Winmodems. I just don't "trust" jumperless boards. The way I see it a PnP Bios is gonna do what it wants to do. If I can smack the greedy sucker around with switches, it'll do what I tell it to do, whether it likes it or not...

Sorry for the delay in posting here. Using the 100Mhz FSB, this Celery runs at 850Mhz, as verified by WCPUID, 3DMark 2000, and the BIOS. Had to use 1.75v, but I modified a GlobalWin FDP32 to fit it (and used a copper shim, a must have for these flip chips), so it stays relatively cool, 34'C. Good Luck.

Thanks Padawan. I'm still collecting parts for this, but I've got a "Gold Orb" cooler I was planning on using. What does the copper shim accomplish and where does one get that animal?
